* "Dialogue of Civilizations: How Asia sowed the seeds of internationalization" (2019-05-14, news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d514f7767544e34457a6333566d54/index.html) [archive.is/HT2Gl] [begin excerpt]: The seeds of internationalization were sowed about 4,500 years ago in Asia with archaeological research showing clear evidence of connectivity between all the major civilizations of the period, according to prominent Iranian archaeologist Prof. Hassan Fazeli Nashli. He emphasized that the Asian civilizations were also instrumental in two of the earliest "revolutions" that shaped the course of human history.
"Internationalization occurred in Asian countries. For example, we know that exactly around 4,500 years ago, a big interconnection between Syria, Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), Persia (Iran), Magan (Oman), Meluha (India), Dilmun civilization (Arabia) and China existed," Fazeli Nashli, a professor at University of Tehran's Department of Archaeology, told CGTN Digital.
"We can see how societies became interlinked, and interconnected to each other around 2nd and 3rd millennium BCE," paving the way for "dialogue of civilizations," which wasn't just confined to trade and commerce but also included exchange of ideas and "cultural components," added the Iranian archaeologist, who is currently in China on an exchange program as a visiting fellow at Peking University's Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. * "Longmen Grottoes: A symbol of ancient cultural exchange in Asia" (2019-05-13, news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d514f79516a4e34457a6333566d54/index.html) [archive.is/wcDNW]:
When Siddhartha Gautama ventured out of India centuries ago, each modern-day Asian country interpreted his Buddhist teachings differently. China was no exception. And to this day, the Longmen Grottoes in central China's Henan Province, feature tens of thousands of Buddha statues sculpted in caves.
For instance, the Giant Vairocana Buddha, the must-see of the site, which sits high in a cave.
The 17 meter-high statue was carved into the cliff centuries ago. Many say it resembles Emperor Wuzetian from the Tang Dynasty, sculpted with vigor and grace. Whether or not that's true, since Buddhism was introduced to China, it has incorporated many local elements.

Take this sculpture of Sakyamuni as an example. Its thin face, slim body and light robes represent a major shift from the so-called Gandhara style found in India.
Jiao Jianhui, deputy researcher of Longmen Grottoes Research Academy said, "Traditionally, Indian style Buddhas have plumpish faces, deep eyes, high noses, and wear heavy kasayas. But this Buddha here blended into Chinese aestheticism, specifically that from the literati in the Southern Dynasty."
Apart from Buddhas, the architecture style of these caves also evidences the localization of Indian Buddhist art, such as in the details of the ancient Chinese pagoda, and the wooden structure of the Chinese palace.
The Longmen Grottoes are considered some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Some call them the encyclopedia of Chinese Buddhism. Although the cave was built in ancient times, the influence of the foreign culture can be found in the magnificent art.
The construction of the Longmen Grottoes began in the late 5th century during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen when the Wei Dynasty moved its capital from Datong (where they created the famous Yungang Grotto) to Luoyang. At this time, Chinese Buddhism was reaching its first peak, and the emperor was a pious believer.
Carving continued after the Wei Dynasty through the successive six dynasties, including Tang and Song, for a span of over 400 years and the Tang Dynasty witnessed the second peak of Buddhist belief.
After 1,500 years, Longmen Grottoes is still magnificent. Its rich content reflects from different aspects the development and changes in ancient China's politics, economy, religion and culture. UNESCO has also listed Longmen Grottoes as World Cultural Heritage Site.

Jiao said during the Northern Wei Dynasty, many envoys, monks and businessman from central and western Asia traveled to Luoyang for exchanges. Their cultures and lifestyles have also shaped the style of the Longmen Grottoes.
"At that time, Chinese people normally sat on the ground. But this Maitreya Buddha looks like he is sitting on a chair or something. This kind of posture was more often seen in Central Asia, especially among aristocrats," said Jiao.

Jiao has been studying the Grottoes for 20 years. He said the Longmen Grottoes document the vivid exchanges between Chinese and other Asian civilizations.
Jiao added that it not only reflects the peak of Buddhist belief in ancient China, but also encapsulates the cultural sophistication during that period.

* "Phyohun Temple" (2017-03-14, exploredprk.com/history/phyohun-temple/) [archive.is/l1ZKu]
* "Phyohun Temple" (2019-05-09, rodong.rep.kp/en/index.php?strPageID=SF01_02_01&newsID=2019-05-09-0012) [archive.is/bNGrA]:
The Phyohun Temple is situated in the mouth of the Manphok Valley in Inner Kumgang of Mt Kumgang in Kangwon Province. It counts much among four renowned temples in Mt Kumgang.
According to records, the temple was built in 670. Thorough repairs were made on it in 1864. It had since been reconstructed several times.
Originally, it was a large temple composed of more than 20 buildings.
The Panyabo Hall is a main building of the temple. It belongs to its typical gaily-decorated buildings that testify to the refined sculpture of Korea.
The hall contains a Buddhist altar and other Buddhist images and paintings as they are.
The Myongbu Hall stands east of the Panyabo Hall and the Ryongsan Hall west of it. They are both gabled houses with twin eaves. The three halls contrast with each other in form whereas one blends well with the others.
Original Buddhist images and other relics used in Buddhist rites are preserved in the buildings of the temple to remind one of the past.
The temple is the valuable heritage and treasure of Korea that demonstrate the prominent talent and wisdom of our ancestors.

* "Indonesia: The sacred place of Buddhism" (2019-05-11, news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d674e31416a4e34457a6333566d54/index.html) [archive.is/nmHNF] [begin excerpt]: The Borobudur Compounds, the sacred place of Buddhism is one of the world's largest Buddhist temples and is known as one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.
The compounds are located in the Kedu Valley, Central Java in Indonesia.
Built between the eighth and ninth centuries during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, the main temple is composed of three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa.
The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 square meters. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha.
The Borobudur Compounds was used as a Buddhist temple from its construction until sometime between the 10th and 15th centuries when it was abandoned. It was rediscovered in the 19th century and after its restoration in the 20th century, it has been back to a Buddhist archaeological site again. [end excerpt]

* "The Age Of The Renaissance" (1967, by Denys Hay) [https://archive.org/details/The-Age-Of-The-Renaissance-1967-Denys-Hay/page/n57]
Defines the growth and meaning of the Renaissance movement in Europe, from its beginnings in Florence and development in other cities, to its effect on scholarship and ideas, and its impact on literature and art.
Perhaps the most beautiful of the works produced for the publisher’s acclaimed series on Civilization. No age was as dedicated to beauty as the Renaissance, and this book is perhaps one of the best ever printed to capture the unparalleled achievements of the age of Ariosto and Shakespeare, Petrarcha and Rabelais, of Michelangelo and Leonardo and Raphael, the great Medici, Elizabeth of England, Philip of Spain, et al infinitum. The text was co-written by twelve leading experts on the period under the direction of editor Denys Hay. The illustrations are of course especially noteworthy and very finely produced.
Contributors: Cantimori, Delio, L. D. Ettlinger, Cecil Grayson, John Hale, Joel Hurstfield, I. D. McFarlane, Peter Murray, A. A. Parker, G. R. Potter, Nicolai Rubenstein, Roberto Weiss.
Denys Hay was a historian specializing in medieval and Renaissance Europe, and notable for demonstrating the influence of Italy on events in the rest of the continent. He taught at the University of Edinburgh from 1954, eventually becoming Professor of Medieval History until he retired in 1980, and is remembered with the "Denys Hay Seminar" there. His final posting was to the European University Institute in Florence, where he was Professor in the History Department.
