The worlds are so small that previous surveys had overlooked them. One of them is one of the smallest known so far; another one could offer conditions friendly to life. The researchers re-analyzed a part of the data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope with a new and more sensitive method that they developed. The team estimates that their new method has the potential of finding more than 100 additional exoplanets in the Kepler mission’s entire data set. The scientists describe their results in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

* "Farmers have less leisure time than hunter-gatherers" (2019-05-21, University of Cambridge, via sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/05/190520115646.htm) [archive.is/kSzpc] [begin excerpt]: Hunter-gatherers in the Philippines who adopt farming work around ten hours a week longer than their forager neighbours, a new study suggests, complicating the idea that agriculture represents progress. The research also shows that a shift to agriculture impacts most on the lives of women.
For two years, a team including University of Cambridge anthropologist Dr Mark Dyble, lived with the Agta, a population of small scale hunter-gatherers from the northern Philippines who are increasingly engaging in agriculture.
Every day, at regular intervals between 6am and 6pm, the researchers recorded what their hosts were doing and by repeating this in ten different communities, they calculated how 359 people divided their time between leisure, childcare, domestic chores and out-of-camp work. While some Agta communities engage exclusively in hunting and gathering, others divide their time between foraging and rice farming.
The study, published today in Nature Human Behaviour, reveals that increased engagement in farming and other non-foraging work resulted in the Agta working harder and losing leisure time. On average, the team estimate that Agta engaged primarily in farming work around 30 hours per week while foragers only do so for 20 hours. They found that this dramatic difference was largely due to women being drawn away from domestic activities to working in the fields. The study found that women living in the communities most involved in farming had half as much leisure time as those in communities which only foraged.
Dr Dyble, first author of the study, says: "For a long time, the transition from foraging to farming was assumed to represent progress, allowing people to escape an arduous and precarious way of life.
"But as soon as anthropologists started working with hunter-gatherers they began questioning this narrative, finding that foragers actually enjoy quite a lot of leisure time. Our data provides some of the clearest support for this idea yet."
The study found that on average, Agta adults spent around 24 hours each week engaged in out-of-camp work, around 20 hours each week doing domestic chores and around 30 hours of daylight leisure time. But the researchers found that time allocation differed significantly between adults.
For both men and women leisure time was lowest at around 30 years of age, steadily increasing in later life. There was also a sexual division of labour with women spending less time working out-of-camp, and more time engaged in domestic chores and childcare than men, even though men and women had a similar amount of leisure time. However, the study found that the adoption of farming had a disproportionate impact on women's lives.
Dr Dyble says "This might be because agricultural work is more easily shared between the sexes than hunting or fishing. Or there may be other reasons why men aren't prepared or able to spend more time working out-of-camp. This needs further examination."
Agriculture emerged independently in multiple locations world-wide around 12,500 years ago, and had replaced hunting and gathering as the dominant mode of human subsistence around 5,000 years ago. [end excerpt]

Kaesong Chomsongdae is an astronomical observatory built in the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392), which shows the Korean nation's creative wisdom.
It is located in the western part of Manwoldae in Manwol-dong, Kaesong City.
Originally Chomsongdae was composed of the pedestal made of well-trimmed granites and astronomical instruments on it, but there is only the pedestal at present.
From the early days of its foundation, Koryo Kingdom organized public offices in charge of astronomy and meteorology to make an observation and register the results in detail.
The offices had recorded sunspots more than 50 times from 1105 to the closing days of Koryo Kingdom.
There are also detailed records about peculiar astronomical phenomena like solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, comets and meteors.
And the kingdom had already used five kinds of calendars from the 11th century on the basis of its own astronomical observatory data.

- part 2 (news.cgtn.com/news/3345444f34494464776c6d636a4e6e62684a4856/index.html) [archive.is/gmSIv]:
CHEN LIFENG MUSEUM EDUCATOR "My name is Chen Lifeng. I am a museum educator in Xi'an Beilin Museum. We call it the Forest of Stone Tablets Museum. Here it has collected over four thousand pieces of stones. Among them, most famous stone tablet is the Nestorian Stone Tablet. It's the earliest record about Christianity in ancient China."
The Nestorian stone tablet is a 279-centimeter limestone block. It was erected in the year 781 during the Tang Dynasty.
CHEN LIFENG MUSEUM EDUCATOR "Alopen came to the City of Chang'an in the year 635. Emperor ordered chancellor to welcome them and help them to translate the holy Bible into Chinese. We can read some sentences like 寺满百城. In the big cities, you could find different churches. And people became more and more believed in Christianity --- the third religion after Buddhism, Taoism. Every Christmas Day, the Emperor would share delicious food to people who believed in Christianity. That's also the earlier record about the Christmas Day in ancient China."
According to the stone tablet, Alopen and his fellow Syriac missionaries came to China from the Eastern Roman Empire, bringing sacred books and images.
LU YUAN RESEARCH FELLOW "I have worked at Xi'an Beilin Museum for 30 years, ever since I was 29 years old. It's not an exaggeration to say that, among the thousands of stone tablets here -- and among the tens of thousands of stone tablets across China -- this Nestorian Monument enjoys the most amount of international attention. It's also been one of the most thoroughly studied stone tablets by scholars both at home and abroad."
CHEN LIFENG MUSEUM EDUCATOR "On top of the stone tablet, you will find the cross. We all know that stands for Christianity. But below the cross, we can see the lotus and auspicious cloud. Lotus stands for Buddhism, and auspicious clouds stand for Taoism. From the two sides of the bottom, we can find a strange language, later identified as Syriac. It's a kind of old Syrian, mainly about the names of missionaries, and mountains and rivers in the ancient Roman Empire. Christianity brought cultures from Rome even from Persia to the ancient Tang Dynasty. And more than that, we can get ideas about new medical skills, even some food, and in every aspect."
The stone tablet was buried in the year 845, during an era of religious suppression. It was only rediscovered in 1625 during the Ming Dynasty. Overseas exhibitions of the Nestorian stone tablet have been forbidden since 2003.
LU YUAN RESEARCH FELLOW "When different cultures and traditions meet, they clash with each other then integrate. The Chinese philosopher Confucius advocates seeking harmony from diversity. I think this is true, as it reflects the trajectories of human history. It will remain this way in the future."

He emphasized that the Asian civilizations were also instrumental in two of the earliest "revolutions" that shaped the course of human history.
"Internationalization occurred in Asian countries. For example, we know that exactly around 4,500 years ago, a big interconnection between Syria, Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), Persia (Iran), Magan (Oman), Meluha (India), Dilmun civilization (Arabia) and China existed," Fazeli Nashli, a professor at University of Tehran's Department of Archaeology, told CGTN Digital.
"We can see how societies became interlinked, and interconnected to each other around 2nd and 3rd millennium BCE," paving the way for "dialogue of civilizations," which wasn't just confined to trade and commerce but also included exchange of ideas and "cultural components," added the Iranian archaeologist, who is currently in China on an exchange program as a visiting fellow at Peking University's Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. * "Longmen Grottoes: A symbol of ancient cultural exchange in Asia" (2019-05-13, news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d514f79516a4e34457a6333566d54/index.html) [archive.is/wcDNW]:
When Siddhartha Gautama ventured out of India centuries ago, each modern-day Asian country interpreted his Buddhist teachings differently. China was no exception. And to this day, the Longmen Grottoes in central China's Henan Province, feature tens of thousands of Buddha statues sculpted in caves.
For instance, the Giant Vairocana Buddha, the must-see of the site, which sits high in a cave.
The 17 meter-high statue was carved into the cliff centuries ago. Many say it resembles Emperor Wuzetian from the Tang Dynasty, sculpted with vigor and grace. Whether or not that's true, since Buddhism was introduced to China, it has incorporated many local elements.

Take this sculpture of Sakyamuni as an example. Its thin face, slim body and light robes represent a major shift from the so-called Gandhara style found in India.
Jiao Jianhui, deputy researcher of Longmen Grottoes Research Academy said, "Traditionally, Indian style Buddhas have plumpish faces, deep eyes, high noses, and wear heavy kasayas. But this Buddha here blended into Chinese aestheticism, specifically that from the literati in the Southern Dynasty."
Apart from Buddhas, the architecture style of these caves also evidences the localization of Indian Buddhist art, such as in the details of the ancient Chinese pagoda, and the wooden structure of the Chinese palace.
The Longmen Grottoes are considered some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Some call them the encyclopedia of Chinese Buddhism. Although the cave was built in ancient times, the influence of the foreign culture can be found in the magnificent art.
The construction of the Longmen Grottoes began in the late 5th century during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen when the Wei Dynasty moved its capital from Datong (where they created the famous Yungang Grotto) to Luoyang. At this time, Chinese Buddhism was reaching its first peak, and the emperor was a pious believer.
Carving continued after the Wei Dynasty through the successive six dynasties, including Tang and Song, for a span of over 400 years and the Tang Dynasty witnessed the second peak of Buddhist belief.
After 1,500 years, Longmen Grottoes is still magnificent. Its rich content reflects from different aspects the development and changes in ancient China's politics, economy, religion and culture. UNESCO has also listed Longmen Grottoes as World Cultural Heritage Site.

Jiao said during the Northern Wei Dynasty, many envoys, monks and businessman from central and western Asia traveled to Luoyang for exchanges. Their cultures and lifestyles have also shaped the style of the Longmen Grottoes.
"At that time, Chinese people normally sat on the ground. But this Maitreya Buddha looks like he is sitting on a chair or something. This kind of posture was more often seen in Central Asia, especially among aristocrats," said Jiao.

Jiao has been studying the Grottoes for 20 years. He said the Longmen Grottoes document the vivid exchanges between Chinese and other Asian civilizations.
Jiao added that it not only reflects the peak of Buddhist belief in ancient China, but also encapsulates the cultural sophistication during that period.

* "Phyohun Temple" (2019-05-09, rodong.rep.kp/en/index.php?strPageID=SF01_02_01&newsID=2019-05-09-0012) [archive.is/bNGrA]:
The Phyohun Temple is situated in the mouth of the Manphok Valley in Inner Kumgang of Mt Kumgang in Kangwon Province. It counts much among four renowned temples in Mt Kumgang.
According to records, the temple was built in 670. Thorough repairs were made on it in 1864. It had since been reconstructed several times.
Originally, it was a large temple composed of more than 20 buildings.
The Panyabo Hall is a main building of the temple. It belongs to its typical gaily-decorated buildings that testify to the refined sculpture of Korea.
The hall contains a Buddhist altar and other Buddhist images and paintings as they are.
The Myongbu Hall stands east of the Panyabo Hall and the Ryongsan Hall west of it. They are both gabled houses with twin eaves. The three halls contrast with each other in form whereas one blends well with the others.
Original Buddhist images and other relics used in Buddhist rites are preserved in the buildings of the temple to remind one of the past.
The temple is the valuable heritage and treasure of Korea that demonstrate the prominent talent and wisdom of our ancestors.

The compounds are located in the Kedu Valley, Central Java in Indonesia.
Built between the eighth and ninth centuries during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, the main temple is composed of three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa.
The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 square meters. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha.
The Borobudur Compounds was used as a Buddhist temple from its construction until sometime between the 10th and 15th centuries when it was abandoned. It was rediscovered in the 19th century and after its restoration in the 20th century, it has been back to a Buddhist archaeological site again. [end excerpt]

* "The Age Of The Renaissance" (1967, by Denys Hay) [https://archive.org/details/The-Age-Of-The-Renaissance-1967-Denys-Hay/page/n57]
Defines the growth and meaning of the Renaissance movement in Europe, from its beginnings in Florence and development in other cities, to its effect on scholarship and ideas, and its impact on literature and art.
Perhaps the most beautiful of the works produced for the publisher’s acclaimed series on Civilization. No age was as dedicated to beauty as the Renaissance, and this book is perhaps one of the best ever printed to capture the unparalleled achievements of the age of Ariosto and Shakespeare, Petrarcha and Rabelais, of Michelangelo and Leonardo and Raphael, the great Medici, Elizabeth of England, Philip of Spain, et al infinitum. The text was co-written by twelve leading experts on the period under the direction of editor Denys Hay. The illustrations are of course especially noteworthy and very finely produced.
Contributors: Cantimori, Delio, L. D. Ettlinger, Cecil Grayson, John Hale, Joel Hurstfield, I. D. McFarlane, Peter Murray, A. A. Parker, G. R. Potter, Nicolai Rubenstein, Roberto Weiss.
Denys Hay was a historian specializing in medieval and Renaissance Europe, and notable for demonstrating the influence of Italy on events in the rest of the continent. He taught at the University of Edinburgh from 1954, eventually becoming Professor of Medieval History until he retired in 1980, and is remembered with the "Denys Hay Seminar" there. His final posting was to the European University Institute in Florence, where he was Professor in the History Department.

Scientists in Chile say they have found a footprint dating from at least 15,600 years ago, making it the earliest such sign of man's presence in the Americas.
The footprint was found at the Pilauco excavation in the city of Osorno (820 kilometers, south of Santiago), where scientists have been digging since 2007.
Archeologists from the Austral University of Chile said the footprint was first spotted in 2011 next to a house. It took years for paleontologist Karen Moreno and geologist Mario Pino to reliably confirm that the print was human.
"There are other human footprints in the Americas," Pino told the Osorno newspaper El Austral, "but none has been dated as far back."
He said scientists were able to do so by applying radiocarbon dating techniques to organic plant material where the print was found.
Pino said the footprint appears to be that of a barefoot man weighing about 70 kilograms (155 pounds) and of the species Hominipes Modernus, a relative of Homo Sapiens.
The area in Chile has proven rich in fossils, including evidence of an ancestor of today's elephants and American horses, as well as of more recent human presence.
An earlier footprint found at a site south of Osorno was found to be about 1,000 years more recent.
The newer findings were published in the latest edition of the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS One.

-- China confirms oldest tomb with squatting owner
A 13,500-year-old tomb with a headless woman "squatting" inside was confirmed as the oldest Chinese tomb where the owner was laid to rest in a certain posture.
The tomb is part of the Qingtang ruins in the city of Yingde, southern China's Guangdong Province. From within the tomb, archaeologists have unearthed remains of a female aged between 13 and 18 years old with her head missing for unknown reasons.
It is the oldest tomb found in China with a squatting owner or an owner whose body was deliberately placed in a specific position, said Liu Suoqiang, who heads the Qingtang ruins excavation project.
-- 17,000-year-old pottery fragments found in southern China
Chinese archaeologists have found pottery fragments dating back about 17,000 years in southern China's Guangdong Province.
The paleolithic pottery fragments discovered in the Qingtang ruins in the city of Yingde provide more proof that southern China might be the first region where pottery was ever produced.
More than 10,000 pieces have been unearthed in the ruins since 2016 including fossils of human bones, stoneware and pottery. [end excerpt]

* "Ramses II gets new home" (2006, via arabworldbooks.com/egyptomania/ramses.htm) [archive.is/gxFqF]:
A huge granite statue of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II has arrived at its new home to the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is to open near the Giza Pyramids outside Cairo. For 50 years, it had stood in a Cairo square, hemmed in by bridges, an underground railway and a mosque. There were worries that heavy pollution was damaging the 3,200-year-old statue, which is 11 metres (36 feet) high and weighs about 83 tonnes.
It took 10 hours for the colossus to travel the 2km to its new home.
The council of antiquities has taken extreme precautions to ensure the move goes well, even doing a dry-run with a fake statue.Trees and other overhead obstructions on the route have been moved.
The statue was transported upright through Cairo at a stately pace on two flatbed trucks.
Tens of thousands of people came out to watch it go by.
The statue was transported in one piece and a steel cage was built around it to hold it steady.
The head of Ramses, protruding from the protective steel, was wrapped in plastic and thick padding, but its face was visible to the crowds lining the streets
The statue will be renovated as its new home is built. The museum, which also will house King Tutankhamun's mummy and other treasures, is not expected to open until 2010.

* "Five thousand archeological sites reflect Homs wide cultural diversity" (2019-04-14, sana.sy/en/?p=163290) [archive.is/Lqu7U]:
Homs central province enjoys  a wide cultural diversity as it embraces about five thousand archeological sites which have been the fruit of tens of successive civilizations.
The archeological sites in Homs province, according to Chairman of Tourism Directorate Ahmad Akkash, belong to 33 successive civilizations and they embrace markets, khans, traditional handicrafts shops and ancient houses that represent unique tourist destinations.
Akkash said that these tourist destinations are able to achieve economic recovery, in addition to their role on the level of knowledge.
He called for rehabilitating the sites which are in danger of major collapse and for paying more attention to providing the tourist services in them.
The wide area of Homs province made it rich in the cities and the huge archeological monuments such as Palmyra, Krak des Chevaliers, al-Hayr al-Sharqi Palace, Umm al-Zennar Church, Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque, Tal al-Mishirfa, Saint George Monastery or Deir Mar Georges and the Church of Saint Elian, in addition to many ancient markets and gates which makes Homs the first tourist destination in Syria, particularly after restoring security and stability to most of its areas.
Krak des Chevaliers is a prominent archeological site in Homs, particularly as it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 as it enjoys a unique architectural style, in addition to its location as it is surrounded by a charming natural scene.
Palmyra City is also one of the archeological sites which have been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, but 16 years before Krak des Chevaliers, and upgrading the reality of the city after the destruction it went through at the hands of terrorists has become necessary to activate the tourist movement in the province along with developing its infrastructure and facilities such as the restaurants and hotels.
After the heavy rainfalls witnessed in the year 2019, Afqa archeological Spring returned to life and started to flow again after its dryness, which lasted about 25 years.
The spring was historically thought to be the cause of prosperity and the continuity of life in Palmyra City more than 6,000 years ago.
After the spring flew again, the therapeutic tourism returned to the city as mineral water is a means for healing, especially of dermatological, intestinal and articular diseases, according to Archeologist and Chairman of the Tourism Department Jamil Omer al-Qayyem.
Al-Qayyem called for rehabilitating the spring to invest it in the fields of archeology, environment and tourism and to put it within the tourism investment programs held by the Ministry of Tourism annually.
In addition to the archeological sites which Homs has been famous for worldwide, it also embraces other important sites such as Kharbaqa Dam which is a Roman era Palmyrene gravity dam in the Syrian desert about 70 km southwest from Palmyra on the road to Damascus.
The dam, built of rubble, concrete, and dressed with ashlar stones, dates to the first or second century AD. The dam later was used as a water supply for the Umayyad palace of Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi.
Due to the systematic destruction which Homs province went through at the hands of Takfiri organizations during the years of the terrorist war which dragged on for about eight years, it has become necessary to launch awareness campaigns to enhance the care for the archeological sites and to rehabilitate them.

The church was originally completed in 339 AD by St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, but destroyed by fire, although some underground parts survived. It was overlaid by the present Church of the Nativity by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 565 AD.
In the underground Grotto of the Nativity, a 14-point silver star marks the exact birthplace of Jesus, the founder of Christianity that expanded to have more than two billion believers today.
The oldest church in daily use has been a pilgrimage destination over the past 1,700 years. [end excerpt]

There are a couple of hypotheses why an ancient Roman temple stands in Armenia. The first story goes that the temple was built by Tiridates I, who had been crowned by the Roman emperor Nero. Nero sent the Armenian monarch back east with a generous sum of money, in the aim of building the fortified city of Garni and its central temple.
Another theory demonstrated that Garni isn't a temple but rather the tomb of one of the Romanized Armenian kings, based on architectural evidence.
With the passage of time, no one knows the mystery of the temple. It has remarkably survived the destruction of pagan temples in the 4th century CE, and countless invasions and earthquakes until its collapse in 1679, and was reconstructed between 1969-1975. [end excerpt]

Covered in elaborate brickwork with a blue tile inscription at the top, it is noteworthy for the quality of its architecture and decoration, which represent the culmination of an architectural and artistic tradition in this region. Its impact is heightened by its dramatic setting, a deep river valley between towering mountains in the heart of the Ghur province.

The Minaret and Archaeological Remains of Jam is a 65-meter tall structure covered in brickwork with a blue tile inscription at the top.
The Minaret is completely covered with geometric decoration in relief enhanced with a Kufic inscription in turquoise tiles.
Built in 1194 by the great Ghurid Sultan Ghiyas-od-din (1153-1203), its emplacement probably marks the site of the ancient city of Firuzkuh, believed to have been the summer capital of the Ghurid dynasty.
Surrounding remains include a group of stones with Hebrew inscriptions from the 11th to 12th centuries on the Kushkak hill, and vestiges of castles and towers of the Ghurid settlements on the banks of the Hari River as well as to the east of the Minaret.
A palace, fortifications and a Jewish cemetery are scattered around the Jam and those archaeological landscape has been suggested to be the remains of the lost Turquoise Mountain.
A group of French explorers discovered the Minaret of Jam in 1958. Active restoration efforts were made and scientific studies are conducted to slow the decay since the early 70's.
Located near the Hari and Jam rivers, the Minaret of Jam is threatened by erosion and water infiltration. It is described in the UNESCO's list of World Heritage in Danger because of the precarious state of the minaret and the looting at the site.

The remains of a series of adjacent wall cities and buildings in this vast oasis span 4,000 years of human history. They are most completely preserved with a number of visible monuments particularly from the last two millennia.
Talking about the origin of Ancient Merv, the earliest references of it were found in the 8-6th centuries B.C. The chroniclers depicted this city with bright epithets, as “the city that holds the universe." Many great thinkers of the Middle Ages lived here, such as Omar Khayyam and As-Samani. [end excerpt]

A number of Spanish tourists visited on Thursday the archeological city of Palmyra, a step that could return the European tourism to Syria after suspension for many years because of the terrorist acts in the country.
The tourists inspected the most prominent features of the cultural civilization of Palmyra and they documented, by photos, the destruction left by Daesh terrorists against the culture, history and human heritage of this archeological city.
The tourists were happy to see this “miracle city,” as they described it, at the same time they were regretful and sad over the sabotage that affected some historic edifices of the city.
Before the Syrian Arab army restored Palmyra on July 3rd, 2017, the ancient city had come under a series of attacks by Daesh terrorists who had destroyed Lion of al-Lat statue, Arc de Triumph and many other famous historic sites.

* "Korean-style Architecture of Building Pagodas" (2019-04-17, naenara.com.kp/en/news/?0+7086) [archive.is/msNpw] [begin excerpt]: The Korean people, with a time-honoured history spanning 5 000 years and brilliant culture, have developed valuable national heritage from ancient times by dint of uncommon talents and wisdom.
The Korean-style architecture of building pagodas is one of them.
Ri In Dong, head of a department of Pyongyang University of Architecture said: The pagoda traces its origin to the menhir in the primitive ages. Out of their desire to protect their own tribes and make them stronger than others, the people in the Bronze Age built the menhir, symbolic of the power of nature. The people’s intention to demonstrate the might of their tribes made them build a vertical structure facing the sky. From that time, they tried to build a vertical structure, namely, the pagoda, in reflection of their dream to soar skyward and, in the course of this, the architecture of building pagodas was developed in Korea.
Korea has many well-renowned pagodas such as the Pagoda of Kumgang Temple, Nine-storied Pagoda of Hwangryong Temple, Tabo Pagoda, Sokga Pagoda and 13-storied Octagonal Pagoda of Pohyon Temple.
The Pagoda of Kumgang Temple built in 498 is located in Taesong District, Pyongyang. This wooden seven-storied pagoda, 67 metres high (body 53.5m and top 13.5m), was the biggest one in the East in those days.
The 13-storied Octagonal Pagoda of Pohyon Temple in Mt Myohyang is the typical structure in the Middle Ages of Korea, which was erected smoothly with delicately-trimmed granite and decorations.
The Nine-storied Wooden Pagoda of Hwangryong Temple built in the 7th century and the Tabo and Sokga pagodas of Pulguk Temple still remain unchanged still today even after a thousand and hundreds of years, showcasing the development of the architecture in those days. [end excerpt]
