Scientists in Chile say they have found a footprint dating from at least 15,600 years ago, making it the earliest such sign of man's presence in the Americas.
The footprint was found at the Pilauco excavation in the city of Osorno (820 kilometers, south of Santiago), where scientists have been digging since 2007.
Archeologists from the Austral University of Chile said the footprint was first spotted in 2011 next to a house. It took years for paleontologist Karen Moreno and geologist Mario Pino to reliably confirm that the print was human.
"There are other human footprints in the Americas," Pino told the Osorno newspaper El Austral, "but none has been dated as far back."
He said scientists were able to do so by applying radiocarbon dating techniques to organic plant material where the print was found.
Pino said the footprint appears to be that of a barefoot man weighing about 70 kilograms (155 pounds) and of the species Hominipes Modernus, a relative of Homo Sapiens.
The area in Chile has proven rich in fossils, including evidence of an ancestor of today's elephants and American horses, as well as of more recent human presence.
An earlier footprint found at a site south of Osorno was found to be about 1,000 years more recent.
The newer findings were published in the latest edition of the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS One.

-- China confirms oldest tomb with squatting owner
A 13,500-year-old tomb with a headless woman "squatting" inside was confirmed as the oldest Chinese tomb where the owner was laid to rest in a certain posture.
The tomb is part of the Qingtang ruins in the city of Yingde, southern China's Guangdong Province. From within the tomb, archaeologists have unearthed remains of a female aged between 13 and 18 years old with her head missing for unknown reasons.
It is the oldest tomb found in China with a squatting owner or an owner whose body was deliberately placed in a specific position, said Liu Suoqiang, who heads the Qingtang ruins excavation project.
-- 17,000-year-old pottery fragments found in southern China
Chinese archaeologists have found pottery fragments dating back about 17,000 years in southern China's Guangdong Province.
The paleolithic pottery fragments discovered in the Qingtang ruins in the city of Yingde provide more proof that southern China might be the first region where pottery was ever produced.
More than 10,000 pieces have been unearthed in the ruins since 2016 including fossils of human bones, stoneware and pottery. [end excerpt]

* "Ramses II gets new home" (2006, via arabworldbooks.com/egyptomania/ramses.htm) [archive.is/gxFqF]:
A huge granite statue of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II has arrived at its new home to the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is to open near the Giza Pyramids outside Cairo. For 50 years, it had stood in a Cairo square, hemmed in by bridges, an underground railway and a mosque. There were worries that heavy pollution was damaging the 3,200-year-old statue, which is 11 metres (36 feet) high and weighs about 83 tonnes.
It took 10 hours for the colossus to travel the 2km to its new home.
The council of antiquities has taken extreme precautions to ensure the move goes well, even doing a dry-run with a fake statue.Trees and other overhead obstructions on the route have been moved.
The statue was transported upright through Cairo at a stately pace on two flatbed trucks.
Tens of thousands of people came out to watch it go by.
The statue was transported in one piece and a steel cage was built around it to hold it steady.
The head of Ramses, protruding from the protective steel, was wrapped in plastic and thick padding, but its face was visible to the crowds lining the streets
The statue will be renovated as its new home is built. The museum, which also will house King Tutankhamun's mummy and other treasures, is not expected to open until 2010.

* "Five thousand archeological sites reflect Homs wide cultural diversity" (2019-04-14, sana.sy/en/?p=163290) [archive.is/Lqu7U]:
Homs central province enjoys a wide cultural diversity as it embraces about five thousand archeological sites which have been the fruit of tens of successive civilizations.
The archeological sites in Homs province, according to Chairman of Tourism Directorate Ahmad Akkash, belong to 33 successive civilizations and they embrace markets, khans, traditional handicrafts shops and ancient houses that represent unique tourist destinations.
Akkash said that these tourist destinations are able to achieve economic recovery, in addition to their role on the level of knowledge.
He called for rehabilitating the sites which are in danger of major collapse and for paying more attention to providing the tourist services in them.
The wide area of Homs province made it rich in the cities and the huge archeological monuments such as Palmyra, Krak des Chevaliers, al-Hayr al-Sharqi Palace, Umm al-Zennar Church, Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque, Tal al-Mishirfa, Saint George Monastery or Deir Mar Georges and the Church of Saint Elian, in addition to many ancient markets and gates which makes Homs the first tourist destination in Syria, particularly after restoring security and stability to most of its areas.
Krak des Chevaliers is a prominent archeological site in Homs, particularly as it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 as it enjoys a unique architectural style, in addition to its location as it is surrounded by a charming natural scene.
Palmyra City is also one of the archeological sites which have been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, but 16 years before Krak des Chevaliers, and upgrading the reality of the city after the destruction it went through at the hands of terrorists has become necessary to activate the tourist movement in the province along with developing its infrastructure and facilities such as the restaurants and hotels.
After the heavy rainfalls witnessed in the year 2019, Afqa archeological Spring returned to life and started to flow again after its dryness, which lasted about 25 years.
The spring was historically thought to be the cause of prosperity and the continuity of life in Palmyra City more than 6,000 years ago.
After the spring flew again, the therapeutic tourism returned to the city as mineral water is a means for healing, especially of dermatological, intestinal and articular diseases, according to Archeologist and Chairman of the Tourism Department Jamil Omer al-Qayyem.
Al-Qayyem called for rehabilitating the spring to invest it in the fields of archeology, environment and tourism and to put it within the tourism investment programs held by the Ministry of Tourism annually.
In addition to the archeological sites which Homs has been famous for worldwide, it also embraces other important sites such as Kharbaqa Dam which is a Roman era Palmyrene gravity dam in the Syrian desert about 70 km southwest from Palmyra on the road to Damascus.
The dam, built of rubble, concrete, and dressed with ashlar stones, dates to the first or second century AD. The dam later was used as a water supply for the Umayyad palace of Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi.
Due to the systematic destruction which Homs province went through at the hands of Takfiri organizations during the years of the terrorist war which dragged on for about eight years, it has become necessary to launch awareness campaigns to enhance the care for the archeological sites and to rehabilitate them.

The church was originally completed in 339 AD by St. Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, but destroyed by fire, although some underground parts survived. It was overlaid by the present Church of the Nativity by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 565 AD.
In the underground Grotto of the Nativity, a 14-point silver star marks the exact birthplace of Jesus, the founder of Christianity that expanded to have more than two billion believers today.
The oldest church in daily use has been a pilgrimage destination over the past 1,700 years. [end excerpt]

There are a couple of hypotheses why an ancient Roman temple stands in Armenia. The first story goes that the temple was built by Tiridates I, who had been crowned by the Roman emperor Nero. Nero sent the Armenian monarch back east with a generous sum of money, in the aim of building the fortified city of Garni and its central temple.
Another theory demonstrated that Garni isn't a temple but rather the tomb of one of the Romanized Armenian kings, based on architectural evidence.
With the passage of time, no one knows the mystery of the temple. It has remarkably survived the destruction of pagan temples in the 4th century CE, and countless invasions and earthquakes until its collapse in 1679, and was reconstructed between 1969-1975. [end excerpt]

Covered in elaborate brickwork with a blue tile inscription at the top, it is noteworthy for the quality of its architecture and decoration, which represent the culmination of an architectural and artistic tradition in this region. Its impact is heightened by its dramatic setting, a deep river valley between towering mountains in the heart of the Ghur province.

The Minaret and Archaeological Remains of Jam is a 65-meter tall structure covered in brickwork with a blue tile inscription at the top.
The Minaret is completely covered with geometric decoration in relief enhanced with a Kufic inscription in turquoise tiles.
Built in 1194 by the great Ghurid Sultan Ghiyas-od-din (1153-1203), its emplacement probably marks the site of the ancient city of Firuzkuh, believed to have been the summer capital of the Ghurid dynasty.
Surrounding remains include a group of stones with Hebrew inscriptions from the 11th to 12th centuries on the Kushkak hill, and vestiges of castles and towers of the Ghurid settlements on the banks of the Hari River as well as to the east of the Minaret.
A palace, fortifications and a Jewish cemetery are scattered around the Jam and those archaeological landscape has been suggested to be the remains of the lost Turquoise Mountain.
A group of French explorers discovered the Minaret of Jam in 1958. Active restoration efforts were made and scientific studies are conducted to slow the decay since the early 70's.
Located near the Hari and Jam rivers, the Minaret of Jam is threatened by erosion and water infiltration. It is described in the UNESCO's list of World Heritage in Danger because of the precarious state of the minaret and the looting at the site.

The remains of a series of adjacent wall cities and buildings in this vast oasis span 4,000 years of human history. They are most completely preserved with a number of visible monuments particularly from the last two millennia.
Talking about the origin of Ancient Merv, the earliest references of it were found in the 8-6th centuries B.C. The chroniclers depicted this city with bright epithets, as “the city that holds the universe." Many great thinkers of the Middle Ages lived here, such as Omar Khayyam and As-Samani. [end excerpt]

A number of Spanish tourists visited on Thursday the archeological city of Palmyra, a step that could return the European tourism to Syria after suspension for many years because of the terrorist acts in the country.
The tourists inspected the most prominent features of the cultural civilization of Palmyra and they documented, by photos, the destruction left by Daesh terrorists against the culture, history and human heritage of this archeological city.
The tourists were happy to see this “miracle city,” as they described it, at the same time they were regretful and sad over the sabotage that affected some historic edifices of the city.
Before the Syrian Arab army restored Palmyra on July 3rd, 2017, the ancient city had come under a series of attacks by Daesh terrorists who had destroyed Lion of al-Lat statue, Arc de Triumph and many other famous historic sites.

* "Korean-style Architecture of Building Pagodas" (2019-04-17, naenara.com.kp/en/news/?0+7086) [archive.is/msNpw] [begin excerpt]: The Korean people, with a time-honoured history spanning 5 000 years and brilliant culture, have developed valuable national heritage from ancient times by dint of uncommon talents and wisdom.
The Korean-style architecture of building pagodas is one of them.
Ri In Dong, head of a department of Pyongyang University of Architecture said: The pagoda traces its origin to the menhir in the primitive ages. Out of their desire to protect their own tribes and make them stronger than others, the people in the Bronze Age built the menhir, symbolic of the power of nature. The people’s intention to demonstrate the might of their tribes made them build a vertical structure facing the sky. From that time, they tried to build a vertical structure, namely, the pagoda, in reflection of their dream to soar skyward and, in the course of this, the architecture of building pagodas was developed in Korea.
Korea has many well-renowned pagodas such as the Pagoda of Kumgang Temple, Nine-storied Pagoda of Hwangryong Temple, Tabo Pagoda, Sokga Pagoda and 13-storied Octagonal Pagoda of Pohyon Temple.
The Pagoda of Kumgang Temple built in 498 is located in Taesong District, Pyongyang. This wooden seven-storied pagoda, 67 metres high (body 53.5m and top 13.5m), was the biggest one in the East in those days.
The 13-storied Octagonal Pagoda of Pohyon Temple in Mt Myohyang is the typical structure in the Middle Ages of Korea, which was erected smoothly with delicately-trimmed granite and decorations.
The Nine-storied Wooden Pagoda of Hwangryong Temple built in the 7th century and the Tabo and Sokga pagodas of Pulguk Temple still remain unchanged still today even after a thousand and hundreds of years, showcasing the development of the architecture in those days. [end excerpt]
