* "Pew, pew! China develops AK-47-sized low lethality ‘laser rifle’ " (2018-07-02, rt.com) [archive.li/jKsW5] [begin excerpt]: Chinese Armed Police units may soon have a new weapon, a portable laser beam that can reach targets from a kilometer away and is powerful enough to set flammable things on fire.
Although classified as “non-lethal,” the infrared laser projector can “burn through clothes in a split second … If the fabric is flammable, the whole person will be set on fire,” according to a South China Post report [archive.li/MgT4o]. The device is called ZKZM-500 and has been prototyped by the Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shaanxi province.
It weighs about 3kg, has an effective range of 800 meters and is powered by a lithium battery pack. It fires in bursts of no more than two seconds and lasts for over 1,000 ‘shots’ before requiring recharge.
The inventors see their “laser rifle” as a means to disable hostiles, for instance during a hostage situation. It can be also used for sabotage, for example, buy causing gas tanks of enemy vehicles explode with no apparent cause. There is a potential use as a crowd control tool, although a beam that can burn through clothes is probably overkill for such a task.
SCMP says the developer is now seeking a partner with a license to produce weapons to put the ZKZM-500 into series. It estimates that it will cost about $15,000 per unit when mass-produced. Basic documentation about the weapon was released last month at a government-run website for military-civilian collaboration. [end excerpt]

* "Portuguese tech firm uncorks a smartphone made using cork" (2018-06-30, cgtn.com) [archive.fo/mOcTq] [begin excerpt]:
A Made in Portugal version of the phone is set to launch this year as Ikimobile completes a plant to transfer most of its production from China.
“Ikimobile wants to put Portugal on the path to the future and technologies by emphasizing this Portuguese product,” chief executive Tito Cardoso told Reuters at Ikimobile’s plant in the cork-growing area of Coruche, 80 km (50 miles) west of Lisbon.
“We believe the product offers something different, something that people can feel good about using,” he said. Cork is harvested only every nine years without hurting the oak trees and is fully recyclable.
Portugal is the world’s largest cork producer and the phone also marks the latest effort to diversify its use beyond wine bottle stoppers.
Portuguese cork exports have lately regained their peaks of 15 years ago as cork stoppers clawed back market share from plastic and metal. Portugal also exports other cork products such as flooring, clothing and wind turbine blades.
A layer of cork covers the phone’s back providing thermal, acoustic and anti-shock insulation. The cork comes in colors ranging from black to light brown and has certified antibacterial properties and protects against battery radiation. [end excerpt]

* "Greek scientists make successful test with replica of ancient steam cannon" (2018-07-01, xinhuanet.com) [archive.is/eYckF] [begin excerpt]: The test was carried out in a field at Koropi, a suburb of Athens. Original cannon had been used to defend the city from invading Romans (213-211 BC). The replica model was constructed four decades ago by Oikonomidis' late colleague Yannis Sakkas.
Centuries before him, Leonardo da Vinci had also reconstructed Archimedes' war device, according to scholars.
The steam cannon basically consists of a metal tube. One end of the tube is capped while the other is loaded with the projectile. Once the tube is heated and reaches high enough temperature, a small amount of water is injected in behind the projectile. It rapidly turns into high-pressure steam, blasting the projectile out of the barrel.
A projectile of about 6 cm diameter reached some 30 meters on Saturday, far less than the over 1,000 meters the ancient steam cannon larger in size could reach. Still the mission was accomplished. [...]
"This is a replay of an experiment made by my colleague and friend Yannis Sakkas 37 years ago. He worked based on a manuscript discovered in the archives of the great inventor, engineer, mechanic, architect and artist Leonardo da Vinci," Oikonomidis told Xinhua before the test.
"Among these archives there were three sketches depicting da Vinci's version of the steam cannon Archimedes had invented to target the Roman ships which had gathered around Syracuse," he said.
"He (Sakkas) wanted to prove that Archimedes' achievements, as narrated, were not legends but the crystal clear reality," Oikonomidis added.
Oikonomidis undertook the task of tearing apart, repairing and putting together again the 1.2 meter-long device which had been left aside in a warehouse for years. [end excerpt]

* "Geophysical exploration sheds light on ancient Silk Road state" (2018-06-27, xinhuanet.com) [archive.fo/9F8cF] [begin excerpt]: Qiuci State was one of 36 states in the Western Regions, a term used in the Han Dynasty (202 BC to 220 AD) for areas west of Yumen Pass, including present-day Xinjiang and parts of central Asia.
Qiuci was on the ancient Silk Road and was a melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Islamic and European cultures.
During its 1,000-year period of great prosperity, it created a splendid Qiuci culture, including song and dance, music, grottoes, folk customs, arts and literature.
However, it was lost to history with almost all of the city walls destroyed by floods and human activities and most of the remains covered by modern buildings, pavements and drainage pipes, making it difficult to detect.
Archaeologists have searched for the ancient state for three years, mainly relying on historical records and a traditional Chinese tool called the Luoyang shovel to search for relics.
But the shovel cannot be used on paved roads and stony places, where Guo and his team displayed their skills to the full. They brought a ground-penetrating radar and a high-density resistivity meter.
"These two instruments complement and verify each other to confirm the existence of underground rammed earth, indicating remains of the city walls," Guo said.
The ground-penetrating radar has a high resolution and can "see" objects at the centimeter scale, while the high-density resistivity meter can detect layouts of long-buried river courses, tombs, walls and building foundations.
They found the outer city wall of Qiuci was 15 to 18 meters wide, with the widest part reaching 30 meters. Some sections were buried 2.5 meters underground.
Scientists also found the northeast corner and the southwest corner of the wall were arc-shaped instead of perpendicular.
"We also got the rough range of the ancient palace, which needs archaeologists to excavate to confirm," Guo said.
The geophysical exploration has offered scientific evidence for further research on Qiuci, and the technologies can be applied in future searches. [end excerpt]
