Science & Futurism
* (2018-07-05, by Douglas Rushkoff, medium.com) [archive.is/mDCsH] [begin excerpt]:There’s nothing wrong with madly optimistic appraisals of how technology might benefit human society. But the current drive for a post-human utopia is something else. It’s less a vision for the wholesale migration of humanity to a new a state of being than a quest to transcend all that is human: the body, interdependence, compassion, vulnerability, and complexity. As technology philosophers have been pointing out for years, now, the transhumanist vision too easily reduces all of reality to data, concluding that “humans are nothing but information-processing objects” [archive.is/sxKBE]. [...]
So instead of considering the practical ethics of impoverishing and exploiting the many in the name of the few, most academics, journalists, and science-fiction writers instead considered much more abstract and fanciful conundrums: Is it fair for a stock trader to use smart drugs [archive.is/tjGDq]? Should children get implants for foreign languages [archive.is/lbtYi]? Do we want autonomous vehicles to prioritize the lives of pedestrians over those of its passengers [archive.is/lGkoM]? Should the first Mars colonies be run as democracies [archive.fo/ustOs]? Does changing my DNA undermine my identity [archive.is/GWmYB]? Should robots have rights [archive.fo/t9KJ6]? [end excerpt]

Unlike other Egyptian mummies kept at the Istanbul Archeology Museum, the ‘two-headed’ mummy was locked away from public at Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace, after Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II ‘exiled’ it in the 19th century. It was previously stored in Yildiz Palace, which was the sultan’s residence at the time. [end excerpt]

Expedition leader Roman Mimokhod said in a statement Monday "until recently, we had known of only one partially preserved ancient Greek harp found in the Piraeus necropolis in Athens and the tuning pegs of a harp uncovered from a necropolis in Taranto, southern Italy… The harp found in the Piraeus necropolis dates back to the late fifth century BC and the tuning pegs from Taranto were discovered in a tomb dating back to the third or second centuries BC. * "Coin found on Aussie island could be oldest artefact in continents history" (2018-07-10, xinhuanet.com) [archive.is/I3CkT] [begin excerpt]: A coin dating back to medieval Africa found on an uninhabited Australian island could be the oldest artefact ever found on the continent.
The copper coin found on Elcho Island, a member of the Wessel Island group off the coast of the Northern Territory (NT), has been linked to similar coins found by a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) serviceman on an unidentified deserted beach in the Wessel Islands in 1944.
Those 1944 coins were linked to Kilwa, an east-African city off the southern coast of present-day Tanzania. If the recent discovery is proved to be from Kilwa it could date back 1,000 years.
The coin has been sent to Canberra where testing will confirm its origin.
"It'll take at least weeks, but if the copper content is the same ... then that'll be it really," Mike Owens, an amateur historian and member of the group that discovered the coin, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Tuesday. [end excerpt]
