Nootropics are brain-enhancing supplements. Occasionally, they’re called smart drugs or cognitive enhancers. People take them to improve their memory, focus, motivation or attention without the hassle of getting a prescription or having to deal with the nasty side effects of drugs like Adderall. Nootropics are (mostly) legal, (mostly) safe and easily available. They’re cheapest and best when you order them from online suppliers, but you can find some of them at Whole Foods.

* "The Psychedelic Transhumanists" (2009-09-29, hplusmagazine.com) [archive.is/n3EqA] [begin excerpt]: Transhumanism in a fortune cookie: the familiar human world is just one point along a continuum of evolution, and we have an unprecedented capacity to participate in that process. And yet, the future being as slippery as it is, there are as many visions for how this might occur as there are visionaries to guess at it. Computer scientists tend to have one transhumanism; genetic engineers, another. However, coherent themes emerge for those who have taken it upon themselves to make a sweeping survey of human inquiry, integrating a keen reading of the vectors of our technology with postmodern insight into the nature of mind.
Some of these thinkers have been catalyzed by the psychedelic experience — in a way, the most informative window into a world beyond the human that we have yet discovered. They understand the message of psychedelics and the message of technology to converge on the horizon of a deeper reading of reality that recognizes mind and matter as dimensions of the same truth — a truth for which language has ill-prepared us.
Among the ranks of these “psychedelic transhumanists” are legendary rebels like Timothy Leary, wise fools like Terence McKenna, cultural commentators like Erik Davis and Mark Pesce and avantpsychopharmacologists like David Pearce. Hailing from disparate knowledge domains, they all share a hyperliterate intelligence that is, in its own way, rigorous. Their arguments are not necessarily subject to the conventional scientific method, but they are not so easily refuted.
Their common vision shares much with the rest of the transhuman community, including an embrace of technology and science as both potent and inevitable; an evolutionary model of the universe and humanity; a sense of the human organism as something that can be tinkered with and expanded; a recognition of drugs as a technology that can dramatically reinvent identity, and a playful challenging of fixed boundaries. In many ways they demonstrate the seed of transhumanism in this moment by exemplifying self-revision and the reevaluation of assumptions as an open ended and ongoing process. And along the way, they tatter the mechanistic control fantasies we have held onto in spite of our most sophisticated inquiries.

* "Mind Machines You Can Build" (by G. Harry Stine) (.doc, direct download) [http://is.gd/3rtFnn], text only [archive.is/N8Iyb], about the author [http://is.gd/67GpbC].
This is a strange and fun little book that challenges one's understanding of the world as we are told it exists. The ideas and devices discussed herein are "impossible" or "frauds" by the standards of some. The trouble is, they work! Maybe not always and for everyone, but they work often enough for some pretty level-headed engineer types like John Campbell and G. Harry Stine to be convinced. Campbell was the famous (some would say infamous) editor of Analog magazine during its heyday, and Stine worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry. I have personally used dowsing rods and they worked for me even though I didn't believe they would work at all. (It was a very strange feeling when they moved, too.)
The book covers such things as pyramids, dowsing rods, energy wheels, and a couple of "strange machines" called the Hieronymus machine (after its inventor) and the Wishing Machine. It even delves into the realm of "symbolic machines," variations of these devices which work even if only the schematic is used. Stine discusses his introduction to these devices, his experiments with them, people's reactions to them, and directions/methods for further research. Although not mentioned in this book, other countries, such as the former USSR, researched such things heavily, and are rumored to have made some very strange and possibly dangerous strides in this field which they call "energetics."
If you think that there is no scientific basis for any of this, you are not current in cutting-edge physics (which is in turn billions of years behind the Universe itself). The work of Myron Evans in O(3) Electrodynamics, Sach's Unified Field Theory, and Michael Leyton's work in higher dimensional symmetry, among others, give plenty of theoretical basis for these beasties to function...
Those who think such things are frauds should not waste their time here. This book is for people who are rational, open-minded, and believe in the empirical part of scientific method. Try them and decide for yourself, unless you prefer to let others do all your thinking for you. Remember, all great scientific breakthroughs were fought tooth and nail by the "keepers of the status quo" of their time.
This book is for people who want to push the envelope, not hide in it.

* "On/off button for passing along epigenetic ‘memories’ to our children discovered" (2016-03-29, kurzweilai.net) [archive.is/vuRih] [begin excerpt]: According to epigenetics — the study of inheritable changes in gene expression not directly coded in our DNA — our life experiences may be passed on to our children and our children’s children. Studies on survivors of traumatic events have suggested that exposure to stress may indeed have lasting effects on subsequent generations.
But exactly how are these genetic “memories” passed on?
A new Tel Aviv University (TAU ) study published last week in Cell now pinpoints the precise mechanism that turns the inheritance of these environmental influences “on” and “off.”
“Until now, it has been assumed that a passive dilution or decay governs the inheritance of epigenetic responses,” said Oded Rechavi, PhD, from TAU’s Faculty of Life Sciences and Sagol School of Neuroscience. “But we showed that there is an active process that regulates epigenetic inheritance down through generations.”
The scientists discovered that specific genes, which they named “MOTEK” (Modified Transgenerational Epigenetic Kinetics), were involved in turning epigenetic transmissions on and off.
“We discovered how to manipulate the transgenerational duration of epigenetic inheritance in worms by switching ‘on’ and ‘off’ the small RNAs that worms use to regulate [these] genes,” said Rechavi.*
These switches are controlled by a feedback interaction between gene-regulating small RNAs, which are inheritable, and the MOTEK genes that are required to produce and transmit these small RNAs across generations.
The feedback determines whether epigenetic memory will continue to the progeny or not, and how long each epigenetic response will last.[end excerpt]

* "Russian Scientists Find Ancient Bacteria That Can Lead to 'Elixir of Youth' " (2015-09-18, sputniknews.com) [archive.is/XhFpP]: A group of Russian scientists discovered an ancient strain of bacteria deep in the Siberian permafrost that could lead to the development of organisms capable of destroying petroleum molecules, turning them into water, and rejuvenating the overall health of living beings, similar to “the elixir of life.” If properly developed, the discovery could lead to a breakthrough in environmental protection, as with the help of the ancient bacteria scientists will clean up oil spills and dangerous chemical leaks by simply turning them into water, Viktor Cherniavskiy, a renowned Russian doctor and epidemiologist, told Sputnik.
There are three different strains of bacteria that were found in the permafrost. The first one is loosely called "the petroleum destroyer," for its ability to break apart petroleum molecules, turning them into water. The second strain is capable of eliminating cellulose molecules. This could help scientists get rid of a great deal of urban and industrial garbage. And the third strain has shown to significantly boost the overall health of living beings.
The bacteria dates back to over 18,000 years, and was found in the permafrost along with the remains of a woolly mammoth in Russia's Republic of Yakutia. When the ancient strains of bacteria were discovered, after a thorough scientific research group of about 10 scientists from several Siberian cities found out that the ancient microorganisms had the potential to change the world, Cherniavsky said.
"Nobody has ever discovered the bacteria that we have discovered, because they were kept frozen under the ground for thousands of years," Cherniavskiy told Sputnik.
The doctor also warned that before further work could be done, scientists need to find out if the bacteria might carry strains, hidden under the permafrost, which could be dangerous to people. Fortunately, so far, scientists have found no ill-effects.
Another difficulty when developing the strains is the fact that they quickly lose their "magical" abilities when exposed to warm temperatures. Cherniavskiy explained that the ideal temperature range is between 4C and 8C. This is something that scientists need to further work on, developing methods that could sustain the transforming and regenerating abilities of the bacteria strains.
A few days ago, Russian media reported on the ancient microorganisms that could lead to the development of an "elixir of life," a substance that allegedly could give people endless youth. According to reports, scientists from Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg and Yakutsk tested a probiotic substance, derived from the ancient bacteria, on old mice in laboratory settings.
The results were astonishing.  The old mice under the experiment showed the signs of rejuvenation — their overall health improved and they recovered breeding abilities, lost due to old age. Now if the same substance were to be given to people, it could cause a significant improvement in their health as well, leading to the discovery of an "elixir of life," Dr. Cherniavskiy speculated.
Unfortunately, it's too soon to say when this could happen due to laws that prohibit testing on humans. However, the Russian epidemiologist said that for centuries the local populations in North-Eastern Siberia were known to have very good health until very old age, despite very harsh environmental conditions. It could have been because they consumed local food that contained specks of the ancient bacteria, Cherniavskiy hypothesized.

* "Dog Gazes Hijack the Brain's Maternal Bonding System" [http://is.gd/nikBQc].
When people say they feel a real connection with their dogs, they aren’t crazy or erroneously anthropomorphizing their schnauzer. Now their emotional feelings are backed up with hard scientific evidence. The brains of both dogs and people secrete oxytocin, a hormone linked to strengthening emotional bonds between mothers and babies. A new study shows that dogs and humans simultaneously secrete oxytocin when they look at each other, thus creating a bond. And it’s a phenomenon that doesn’t happen when wolves look at people, even when they’ve been raised by humans. Woof!

* "Speaking of “Remote Viewing” – Telepathy and “Schizophrenia” Light Up Same Part of Brain?" (2015-09-15, mikemcclaughry.wordpress.com) [archive.is/062jQ] [begin excerpt]: There was an interesting study in 2008 about this that discovered that telepathy activates a specific area of the brain: the right parahippocampus. This study referenced other research projects that demonstrated this same area of the brain was activated during remote viewing (using Ingo Swann as a test subject) and when a psychic accurately “knew” the personal information of strangers. The cuneus, an area inside the occipital lobe, was stimulated during what they called “distant intentionality”, such as distant healing.
The same study also hypothesized that empathy has a connection to special abilities. Turns out that the hippocampus and the cuneus are areas of the brain associated with empathy.
Read the studies here: "Investigating paranormal phenomena: Functional brain imaging of telepathy" (US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) [archive.is/OwCAW] and at [archive.is/yhfhP].
Descartes suggested that the body works like a machine, that it has the material properties of extension and motion, and that it follows the laws of physics. The mind (or soul) was described as a nonmaterial entity that lacks extension and motion, and does not follow the laws of physics. Descartes thought the mind interacts with the body at the pineal gland. Dualism proposes that the mind controls the body, but that the body can also influence the otherwise rational mind. [end excerpt]
* "The Physiology of Psychic Ability" (2009-05-30, believeittour.com) [archive.is/pHHIv] [begin excerpt]: The pineal gland is located in the geographical center of the brain, directly behind the eyes, between the two hemispheres. Psychics and sages throughout the ages have known about this small pine cone-shaped body and called it the “third eye.” The pineal body evolved from our eyes, and is made of the same cells as the retina. So, I suppose one could say quite literally that it is a “third eye.”
Jack Houck earned his MS degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan and retired after 42 years with Boeing as a systems engineer. (That’s the guy who designs and manages the extremely complex projects.) In his spare time, though, he researches the paranormal. He first became interested in this field back in the 70’s when he read an article by Targ and Puthoff who reported that the CIA trained remote viewers to psychically spy on the Russians during the Cold War.
He collected the EEGs of psychics, yogis, shamans, and psychic healers and observed that they all had a specific brain frequency in common: 7.8Hz. He then wondered what would happen if he could stimulate this frequency in a non-psychic person. Would that person become sensitive? To find the answer, Houck translated this 7.8 Hz into sound, (this frequency is too low for the human ear to hear, so Houck coupled it with an audible frequency), and then placed headphones on non-psychics. Within a few minutes to 20 minutes, 50% of the test subjects had an out-of-body experience.
Houck also states that this same 7.8 Hz is attained naturally during REM sleep, and when in a meditative, yogic state. This could explain why some people have premonitions or ghostly encounters while dreaming, and why some psychics need to be in a self-hypnotic trance state to conduct readings or communicate with the dead. Perhaps this frequency trait is genetic, explaining why psychic ability is passed from generation to generation.[end excerpt]

* "Dark Plumage Helps Birds Survive on Small Islands" (2015-07-22, The Auk: Ornithological Advances) [archive.is/KR1gt] [begin excerpt]: Animal populations on islands tend to develop weird traits over time, becoming big (like Galapagos tortoises) or small (like extinct dwarf elephants) or losing the ability to fly (like the flightless parrots of New Zealand). One less-studied pattern of evolution on islands is the tendency for animal populations to develop “melanism”—that is, dark or black coloration. J. Albert Uy and Luis Vargas-Castro of the University of Miami found an ideal species to study this phenomenon in the Chestnut-bellied Monarch (Monarcha castaneiventris), a bird found in the Solomon Islands. Most have the chestnut belly suggested by their name, but in the subspecies found in the Russell Islands, a few all-black birds coexist with the chestnut-bellied majority. After visiting 13 islands of varying sizes to survey their Chestnut-bellied Monarch populations, Uy and Vargas-Castro confirm in a new paper published this week in The Auk: Ornithological Advances that island size predicts the frequency of melanic birds, with populations on smaller islands including more dark individuals. * "The Sea Serpent Reality" (1902-01, Our Day newsmagazine, Vol. 21, N. 1, pg. 16) (.pdf) [is.gd/PDmXJ0]:
After being the subject for many years of uncertainty, doubt and even downright disbelief, the sea serpent has been vindicated officially, and evidence of its living, breathing, spouting reality duly recorded in the Government archives in Washington. In a report to the Hydrographic office of the Navy Department, Henry H. Neligan, one of the regular observers of marine events designated by the Chief Hydrographer, officially vouches for the existence of one of these monsters of the deep. Mr. Neligan's report was mailed in Liverpool, where he arrived on Nov. 10 on the steam ship Irada, of which he is third officer. The serpent was seen while the Irada was on her last regular voyage from Galveston to Liverpool, and a whopper he was, a hundred feet long. Here is Mr. Neligan's report, written in one of the official record books, furnished to its observers by the Hydrographic office:
“Oct. 26, 1901—At 11 a.m. today, in latitude 27 degrees 26 minutes north, and longitude 90 degrees 18 minutes west, passed a large sea serpent appearing about 100 feet long. The head had a blunt square nose and was ejecting water to the height of two or three feet from its nostrils. The animal or fish had three distinct sets of fins and a tail lying across like a porpoise. On its back was a series of humps like a camel. It was heading about east (true) and moving slowly. [signed] Henry H. Neligan. Third Officer Steamship Irada."
The latitude and longitude mentioned by Mr. Neligan are in the Gulf of Mexico, the exact point being about one hundred and twenty miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi river. The word “true” after “east” does not refer to Mr. Neligan's story, but means that the monster was heading actually east
and not easterly by magnetic compass, which varies slightly from the true direction. As for Mr. Neligan, his responsibility is vouched for by the officers of the Hydrographic office. He has been an observer for that branch of the Navy Department for the past thirteen months and has always sent trustworthy and valuable reports.
Officers of the Hydrographic office are believers in the existence of the sea serpent. One of them said: “I am not one of those persons who have no faith in the sea serpent theory. Undoubtedly these serpents existed in ancient times, and it requires no stretch of belief to accept the idea that they exist today. We know that monsters existed on land in prehistoric times and that their disappearance has probably been due to constantly changing climatic conditions. But there has been practically no change, if any at all, in the condition of the sea. These large animals or fish naturally sought the deepest waters. They are probably very few in number and are seldom seen. But men
who follow the sea have vouched for their existence. I, myself, have seen small sea serpents, a yard or so long, in the Indian Ocean. That larger species exist I have always believed.”

Animals as diverse as migrating geese, sea turtles and wolves are known to navigate using the Earth's magnetic field. But until now, no one has pinpointed quite how they do it. The sensor, found in worms called C. elegans, is a microscopic structure at the end of a neuron that other animals probably share, given similarities in brain structure across species. The sensor looks like a nano-scale TV antenna, and the worms use it to navigate underground.
"Chances are that the same molecules will be used by cuter animals like butterflies and birds," said Jon Pierce-Shimomura, assistant professor of neuroscience in the College of Natural Sciences and member of the research team. "This gives us a first foothold in understanding magnetosensation in other animals." [end excerpt]

Monks have been drinking tea for thousands of years to maintain a state of “mindful alertness” during long periods of meditation. But only in the last few years have studies shed light on why tea has this effect on the mind. The two elements responsible for this are caffeine and L-theanine, and it is the combination of the two that makes tea unique from any other drink.

This shattering of my belief system after my unexpected and unwanted mystical experience then led to the greatest intellectual adventure of my life, the reconstruction of a world-view that could make sense of my new convictions – a journey that would ultimately be the topic and tale of my book Tryptamine Palace. One of the things I believe that makes Tryptamine Palace unique amongst contemporary psychedelic literature is that its pages not only offer some complex theories about the basis of the entheogenic experience, but actually present a model – based on neural Bose Einstein Condensates and the holographic nature of the quantum Zero Point Field – that I believe explains the mechanism of the transpersonal-entheogenic experience within the boundaries of current cutting edge science. However rather than revisiting these ideas in depth in this article, I would rather examine in greater detail some of the concepts that have evolved for me since the publication of Tryptamine Palace.

Ain't nothing wrong with being an underground outlaw. You'll die knowing nirvana was just the ultimate escape. See you on the other side of the Time tunnel!
OUTLAW COMIX intro by Matt Bliss:
In Miami in 1972, I quit my job at The Miami Herald and joined a commune that published OUTLAW, an underground newspaper. We aimed to speak politically, even though our most successful columnist was Mama Mangoes, who wrote about vegetarian cuisine. OUTLAW was created with lots of Letraset rub-on fonts for the headlines and body text set on an IBM Selectric. For the color pages, we did The CYMK separations by hand on overlays. The paper was printed at night on a web press used to print on above-ground newspaper, courtesy of their sympathetic pressman. We distributed OUTLAW for free and sold ads on a co-operative basis, such that each advertiser paid a percentage of the total publishing cost of each issue and no more. We made no profit. OUTLAW COMIX was created by volunteer writers and artists, who I recognize here. "Straightarrow": unsigned, "The Voyage of the Ego": Steve Donachie, author. Richard Sevigny, artist, "Space Rider": L. Block, author; D. Moore, artist, Back Cover: Richard Sevigny (richardseviqny.bloqspot.com)

In an unusual study published Wednesday, Norwegian scientists said people born during periods of solar calm may live longer, as much as five years on average, than those who enter the world when the Sun is feisty.
The team overlaid demographic data of Norwegians born between 1676 and 1878 with observations of the Sun.
The lifespan of those born in periods of solar maximum -- interludes marked by powerful flares and geomagnetic storms -- was "5.2 years shorter" on average than those born during a solar minimum, they found.

Is Ayahuasca an Alien Intelligence?
Has ayahuasca arrived on Earth with a mission to save the planet? More than a few seasoned shamanic journeyers have come to this conclusion.
Clearly, encounters with the spirit vine deepen your appreciation for the plant kingdom — for all of nature — which is well timed for our era of ecological crisis. And the heart healing that ayahuasca catalyzes strikes many as an ideal antidote to the most damaging aspects of contemporary society. But is there more to it than that? Does ayahuasca have an intention? Do other plant spirit teachers, such as mushrooms, peyote, and iboga? Entheogenic veterans frequently report encounters with distinct, other worldly intelligences during their psychedelic excursions. Are these truly independent consciousnesses, separate from the self? Where do they come from? Read more at [DeOxy.org]
