The alpha particle spectrometer aboard the Apollo 15 command/service module was designed to detect alpha particles from radon decay and to locate regions with unusual activity on the moon. A significant increase in radon-222 activity was detected from a region containing the crater Aristarchus. The result is interpreted as probably indicating internal activity at the site. By analogy with terrestrial processes, increased radon emanation may be associated with the emission of other volatiles.

Lunar Transient Phenomena (LTP) have been reported for at least 450 years. The events range from bright flashes, to reddish or bluish glows, to fuzzy or foggy patches. Gaseous spectra and photometric measurements of the events have been obtained (e.g., Kozyrev, Sky and Tel. 18, 184 (1959); Sanduleak and Stock, P.A.S.P. 77, 237 (1965)). Several theories have been offered as explanations for LTP, including residual volcanic activity or outgassing, bombardment by energetic particles, and piezoelectric effects. As the first set of digital, data-based multispectral images of the entire Moon, the Clementime data (particularly the UV/VIS and LWIR images) offer a unique opportunity to couple knowledge of compositional relationships within the context of lunar geology in the regions of LTP. We have selected about one dozen regions from Cameron's catalog of LTP (Cameron, Icarus 16, 339 (1972)) for close scrutiny with Clementine measurements. These regions, which include Aristarchus and Schroter's Valley, Alphonsus, Ross D, Plato, and Gassendi, are all areas where numerous reliable historical reports of LTP exist. A secondary source of information is a catalogue compiled by David Darling and Winifred Cameron of observations of LTP obtained by a team of amateur astronomers during the Clementine mission (19 February to 3 May 1994). Our analysis of the Clementine images shows that LTP tend to occur near the edges of maria, in agreement with a suggestion originally made by Cameron (op. cit.). Our analysis of the Clementine multispectral data shows that the reported events also tend to be in craters with rims of distinctly different (bluer) composition. This compositional difference may result from recent slumping of the rim, accompanied by the appearance of fresher underlying material. Such events may be associated with outgassing of volatiles collected in mare basalts. Funded by NASA.

- [original posting, by Rutilus]: Over the years I have read about the colours seen around Aristarchus, last night I observed an extremely clear blue around the crater. In description I would say it was an electric-blue, today I went online and found an image that clearly shows the blue that I saw (taken with a 10 inch reflector). Schoters valley was also magnificent with the olive/mustard colour clearly showing.
So what was the electric-blue colour? it was so clear to see. Is it a by-product of the type of instrument used. I was using my 6" f/15 Achromat refractor with bino-viewers,could it have been C.A. produced by the bright Aristarchus.
Yet, the blue colour I observed is clearly visible in the image taken with a reflector. I tried taking a few pics, I'm rubbish at it (that is why I stick to visual)but after altering contrast the area of the bright feature shows on the images, but not in the electric colour I observed.
- [comment, by Cosmos]: Rutilus said "So what was the electric-blue colour? it was so clear to see. Is it a by-product of the type of instrument used."
No. Aristarchus is a relatively young feature. The material of the Moon's surface slowly darkens and reddens with exposure to solar radiation & the apparent blueness is a contrast feature resulting from the eye (or colour balance of the camera / image processing) being attuned to the tan tint of the "background" against which Aristarchus is set, just as a ray of yellow/white sunlight appears bluish in a room lit by tungsten light.
The colour is "real" in the sense that it can be seen in images made with instruments which have no significant chromatic aberration. You do however need to increase saturation to a very high level to see much in the way of colour contrast on the lunar surface.

- [reply, by Rutilus]: Many thanks for the replys. Regarding the subtle colours on the lunar surface I have observed them quite well usually seen best at near or on the day of full moon.
However the reason for posting was that this was not subtle, it was so clear, the description by A6Q6 of electric arc like is very good indeed, for that is how it appeared.

An art historian and a medical researcher say they have pushed back by hundreds of years the earliest use of a medicinal plant.
Until now, the earliest known use was around 1000 B.C., with visual and written evidence for the myrtle, the lily, the poppy and others. Now, scholars say, the dating of a volcanic eruption and botanically accurate wall paintings indicate that saffron has been a versatile medicine since 3,500 years ago.
They base their case on frescoes at Thera, a Greek island in the Aegean, that have been thought to depict a goddess overseeing the production of perfume or spice. Instead, the scholars say, the frescos, from 1500 or 1600 B.C. -- the exact date is a topic of debate -- show the goddess presiding over the manufacture and use of a drug from the saffron flower.
''We know the date of the frescos,'' the scholars said, ''because a volcanic eruption stopped the clock, much as was the case in Pompeii.'' [...]
The most striking evidence for the conclusion that the frescoes show a goddess of medicine lies in written records from many countries about the use of saffron in 90 illnesses over four millennia.
As for visual evidence, one fresco depicts ''a woman who appears to be treating her bleeding foot with saffron,'' Dr. Bendersky said.
Although up to now scholars had discounted the possibility of widespread saffron use because of its high cost, Dr. Bendersky and Ms. Ferrence point out that just a few milligrams are required for medicinal purposes. In fact, too much may prove fatal. [end excerpt]
