The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced Thursday that a team of 34 Chinese physicists led by Pan Jianwei with the University of Science and Technology of China had won the 2018 Newcomb Cleveland Prize as it laid the groundwork for ultra-secure quantum communication networks of the future.
This is the first time that a Chinese team wins the prize with its home-grown research.
Pan and his Chinese colleagues used a satellite called Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS) or Micius to send entangled photon pairs through the near-vacuum of space, measuring the quantum keys at receiving stations over 1,200 kilometers apart.
Scientists found that if researchers are able to maintain entanglement over long distances, a "hack-proof" messaging encryption system could evolve, according to Pan's study published in the journal Science in June of 2017.
The research shows that a network of satellites could one day form the infrastructure of a quantum internet.
"In principle, methods based on the phenomenon of quantum entanglement represent solutions to the problem of perfectly secure communication," said Jeremy Berg, editor-in-chief of Science and chair of the Newcomb Cleveland Prize Selection Committee.
"However, many challenges remain in converting these in principle methods into practice," said Berg. "The Newcomb Cleveland Prize winning paper presents a substantial step in addressing these challenges, demonstrating quantum communication over very long distances."
Previously, entanglement distribution had only been achieved at a distance up to 100 kilometers due to photon loss in optical fibers or terrestrial free space.
The Newcomb Cleveland Prize, AAAS' oldest award, has honored the most impactful research paper published in the journal Science since 1923.

An image from the Tomb of Nakht, Thebes, Upper Egypt, presents us with a decidedly more domestic scene of another tabby cat. This cat feasts upon a fish as it sits underneath the chairs of its human companions. This pattern of cats with tabby coats continues throughout Egyptian mural art, thereby presenting a very different image from the austere black cat suggested by statuary.
The presence of tabby cats in ancient Egypt is further supported by a recent genetic study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution. In this study the authors confirmed that genetic evidence suggests the blotchy coat patterns common to many domesticated cats today did not emerge until the 18th century. The scientific findings were bolstered by a study of not only Egyptian paintings, but depictions of cats from many different cultures. This work found that throughout the ancient world “cats’ coats were mainly depicted as striped, corresponding to the mackerel-tabby pattern of the wild Felis silvestris lybica.” [end excerpt]

* "Could The Gedi Ruins Be Haunted By Jins?" (2019-01-31, ancient-origins.net/ancient-places/gedi-ruins-kenya-0011412) [archive.is/Vjqbd] [begin excerpt]: Historic cities throughout the world have always intrigued experts and travelers and one of the most fascinating is the abandoned city known as Gedi on the coast of Kenya. The ruins of Gedi are extensive and undeniably impressive, but it was inexplicably deserted and reclaimed by the surrounding jungle. It is only in recent decades that the city, which was at its zenith in the Middle Ages, has been partially recovered from the forest and investigated. The site is now protected by the Kenyan government and is regarded as an important part of the country’s heritage. [...]
The outer wall enclosed an area of some 32 acres - a district where members of the upper class and merchants resided in a city that was once populous. Numerous ruins of the homes dating back to the 14 th century exist to this day - single story, thatched houses with courtyards, built of coral-brick which are similar to Swahili examples found elsewhere on the coast of Africa. The mud-bricks dwellings of the poorer inhabitants were beyond the walls and have long since disappeared.
Evidence of street planning at Gedi shows it had an impressive infrastructure as well as running water and sanitation which was almost unheard of in Medieval Europe. Numerous mosques in the city and its hinterland have sophisticated architectural features such as spandrels and are beautifully decorated with quotes from the Quran. Interestingly enough, they do not have minarets, a characteristic of mosques found elsewhere in the Muslim world. [end excerpt]

However, new research by a team of scientists from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has found that giant pandas had not become specialized bamboo eaters until around 5,000 years ago. [...]
The researchers believe the giant panda changed from carnivore or omnivore to a plant-eating animal. It's difficult to understand what they exactly ate thousands of years ago.
Now, researchers want to find out when pandas switched to their special bamboo diet. To find out, they plan to collect and study more samples from different historical periods over the past 5,000 years. [end excerpt]

Underground City Ozkonak in Turkey -
Ozkonak was accidentally discovered in 1972 by a local resident named Latif Acar. At first he found a small underground hall, but later it turned out that there was a huge city underground,
connected by tunnels. Ozkonak is located on several levels-floors. Now only four floors of this amazing city are open to visitors, but it is known that there are at least ten floors in it, which go 40 meters deep. Curiously, ancient Ozkonak had a complex ventilation system,
sewer and water pipes. Scientists have found that about 60,000 people lived in the city - and this despite the fact that excavations are still ongoing and the boundaries of the city are not precisely defined. Interestingly, the city has a lot of huge stone circles that closed the entrances and exits to the tunnels, protecting the inhabitants from the attacks of enemies.

* "New DNA Testing on 2,000-Year-Old Elongated Paracas Skulls Changes Known History" (2016-07-23, ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/breaking-new-dna-testing-2000-year-old-elongated-paracas-skulls-changes-020914) [archive.is/o0Z6Q] [begin excerpt]:
Marzulli explained that an archaeologist has written a paper about his study of the position of the foramen magnum in over 1000 skulls. “He states that the Paracas skulls, the position of the foramen magnum is completely different than a normal human being, it is also smaller, which lends itself to our theory that this is not cradle headboarding, this is genetic.”
In addition, Marzulli described how some of the Paracas skulls have a very pronounced zygomatic arch (cheek bone), different eye sockets and no sagittal suture, which is a connective tissue joint between the two parietal bones of the skull.
In a normal human skull, there should be a suture which goes from the frontal plate … clear over the dome of the skull separating the parietal plates - the two separate plates – and connecting with the occipital plate in the rear,” said Marzulli. “We see many skulls in Paracas that are completely devoid of a sagittal suture.
There is a disease known as craniosynostosis, which results in the fusing together of the two parietal plates, however, Marzulli said there is no evidence of this disease in the Paracas skulls.
DNA Testing -
The late Sr. Juan Navarro, owner and director of the Museo Arqueologico Paracas, which houses a collection of 35 of the Paracas skulls, allowed the taking of samples from three of the elongated skulls for DNA testing, including one infant. Another sample was obtained from a Peruvian skull that had been in the US for 75 years. One of the skulls was dated to around 2,000 years old, while another was 800 years old.
The samples consisted of hair and bone powder, which was extracted by drilling deeply into the foramen magnum. This process, Marzulli explained, is to reduce the risk of contamination. In addition, full protective clothing was worn.
The samples were then sent to three separate labs for testing – one in Canada, and two in the United States. The geneticists were only told that the samples came from an ancient mummy, so as not to create any preconceived ideas.
Surprising Results -
From the samples, only the mitochondrial DNA (DNA from the mother’s side) could be extracted. Out of four hair samples, one of them couldn’t be sequences. The remaining three hair samples all showed a Haplogroup (genetic population group) of H2A, which is found most frequently in Eastern Europe, and at a low frequency in Western Europe. The bone powder from the most elongated skull tested came back as T2B, which originates in Mesopotamia and what is now Syria, essentially the heart of the fertile crescent. “It rewrites history as we know it,” said Marzulli.
“If these results hold,” writes Brien Foerster on his website Hidden Inca Tours , “the history of the migration of people to the Americas is far more complex than we have been told previously.”
If these results are confirmed through further tests, it means that peoples from Europe and the Middle East migrated to the Americas long before it is conventionally believed.
Marzulli said that mainstream academics will probably attack these results by pointing to the fact that he is not a scientist, but he urges any skeptic to replicate the study. “Attack the evidence folks. Go down and get your own samples, pay for a DNA lab and then come back to me with your science… do some science like we’ve done,” he said. The full lab reports of the DNA tests are available in LA Marzulli’s book Nephilim Hybrids .
The results are also consistent with the fact that many of the Paracas skulls still contain traces of red hair, a color that is not natively found in South America, but originates in the Middle East and Europe.
“No academics as far as we can tell can explain why some of the skulls that still have hair are red or even blonde,” writes Brien Foerster, “the idea that this is from time or bleaching has NOW been disproven by 2 hair experts. For the ancient Paracas people, at least, they had blonde to reddish hair that is 30% thinner than NATIVE American hair. It is GENETIC!” [end excerpt]

Those sounds might have been cryoseisms, or frost quakes.
So, here's how a frost quake happens:
First, the ground has to be saturated with water, like it is in the Chicago-area right now with all the snow.
When there's a sudden drop in temperature, the water freezes and expands.
The expansion and pressure build up causes stress on the frozen soil and rocks around it, and creates a boom noise.
Area you hearing loud bangs? Some of those could be Cryoseisms! AKA Frost Quakes!
When WGN first posted about frost quakes on social media, tons of comments poured in from our viewers about hearing them.
"I thought I was crazy! I was up all night because I kept hearing it," said viewer Chastity Clark Baker on Facebook. "I was scared and thought it was the furnace. I kept walking through the house. I had everyone’s jackets on the table in case we had to run out of here."
Did you think you heard a frost quake? Tell us on WGN's Facebook page.
