People are still buzzing over that “mysterious light” spotted all across Northern California late Wednesday.
In case you missed it, officials say that light may have been a meteor!
That meteor created what officials call a “noctilucent cloud,” or “night shining cloud.”
NASA says the night shining cloud, which is concocted with ingredients from outer space, is very rare.
They were first spotted in 1885.
The last time these types of clouds were seen in the Bay was back in 2011 following a rocket launch.

The colossal heads that Breiner found in Mexico were among 31 subsequently unearthed at three archaeological sites called San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán that were cultural centers for the Olmec civilization dating to 1,200 to 900 years before Christ. Driskill-Smith said her father discovered that these sites, constructed primarily out of volcanic basalt, were aligned toward magnetic north — long before the compass was invented.
He told researchers that his magnetic surveys identified as many as 100 large monuments, but most remain buried. Driskill-Smith said Breiner stopped digging up the artifacts after a helicopter arrived in the middle of the night and stole one of the heads.
Breiner often returned to the archaeological sites in Veracruz, where his 13-ton head is now displayed in the Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa. [end excerpt]

The last important structure, called “Structure IV”, is, in fact, an immense rock-cut chamber cut directly out of the cliff face. The chamber is rectangular, measuring nearly 20 meters (65 feet) on its longer side by 10 meters (33 feet) on the shorter side. It is open to the east and has a rock-cut bench running along the perimeter of the walls. A number of pillar bases and a rectangular basin, probably serving as an altar, are also similarly cut from the living rock. The depth of the cut reaches at least five meters (16 feet) on the northern side. In addition, the upper portion of the cliff face appears to have been artificially leveled, perhaps in an even earlier epoch. It is possible that from this chamber alone at least 1,000 cubic meters or 3,000 tons of rock were removed in ancient times! The astonishing precision of the cut, which left a very smooth and remarkably planar rock face, with no visible chisel or other tool marks, suggests the use of tools that would have hardly been available to the Aztecs or any of the other known Mesoamerican civilizations of antiquity. In all of Mesoamerica, a similar style of monolithic architecture is only found among the ruins of Texcoco, which bear a distinct similarity with the rock-cut temples of Malinalco, although on a much smaller scale. As in the case of Malinalco, the perfectly cut and polished stone basins, stairways, and rock-cut chambers of Texcoco exhibit a level of workmanship far in advance of what could have been achieved with simple stone tools. In addition, the significant erosion to which the rock surface has been subjected in both cases is indicative of an antiquity far more remote than the supposed 15th or early 16th century assumed date of the carvings.
Another point of similarity with the ruins of Texcoco is offered by the presence of rock-cut aqueducts. A number of water channels can be found at Malinalco, particularly on the upper terraces. Their great antiquity is testified by the fact that they appear in some cases to have been cut by later structures and rock-cut trenches.

Songkran (Thai: เทศกาลสงกรานต์, pronounced [tʰêːt.sā.kāːn sǒŋ.krāːn]) is the Thai New Year's national holiday. Songkran is on the 13 April every year, but the holiday period extends from 14 to 15 April. In 2018 the Thai cabinet extended the festival nationwide to five days, 12–16 April, to enable citizens to travel home for the holiday. In 2019, the holiday will be observed 12–16 April as 13 April falls on a Saturday. The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti,literally "astrological passage", meaning transformation or change. The term was borrowed from Makar Sankranti, the name of a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart and with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia, in keeping with the Buddhist calendar. The New Year takes place at virtually the same time as the new year celebrations of many countries in South Asia like China (Dai People of Yunnan Province), Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka.
In Thailand, New Year is now officially celebrated on 1 January. Songkran was the official New Year until 1888, when it was switched to a fixed date of 1 April. Then in 1940, this date was shifted to 1 January. The traditional Thai New Year Songkran was transformed into a national holiday.
Songkran derives from Sanskrit meaning 'to move' or 'movement'. It derives from the movement of the sun from one position to another in the zodiac. According to its literal meaning in Sanskrit, a songkran occurs every month. However, the period that Thai people refer to as songkran happens when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries in the zodiac. The correct name for this period should actually be Maha Songkran ('great songkran') because it coincides with the arrival of a New Year. The songkran festival is, therefore, a celebration of the New Year in accordance with the solar calendar. The celebration covers a period of three days: 13 April is regarded as Maha Songkran, the day that the sun moves into Aries on the zodiac or the last day of the old year. The next day, 14 April is called Wan Nao, the transitional day between the old and the new years, and 15 April is called Wan Thaloeng Sok (Thai: วันเถลิงศก 'to begin a new era or year'), New Year's day itself. Nowadays the royal palace ceased to issue Songkran notification; they replaced it with a small calendar booklet given to the public on New Year's Day. Government Savings Bank still prints a one-page lunisolar calendar, which is different from multiple-page solar calendar commonly seen. The calendar features the image of Songkran goddess with her vehicle and subordinates, led by Chinese zodiac animal holding a flag with Thai script for that zodiac. It also contains a comprehensive information on the correct Songkran day and religious days. People are still buzzing over that “mysterious light” spotted all across Northern California late Wednesday.
In case you missed it, officials say that light may have been a meteor!
That meteor created what officials call a “noctilucent cloud,” or “night shining cloud.”
NASA says the night shining cloud, which is concocted with ingredients from outer space, is very rare.
They were first spotted in 1885.
The last time these types of clouds were seen in the Bay was back in 2011 following a rocket launch.

He was involved in the discovery of Sybaris, a 2,500-year-old Greek city buried 20 feet deep in Southern Italy. In 2005, he explored the wreckage of the 16th century galleon San Felipe, which was lost in 1576 on its way from Manila to Mexico.
The colossal heads that Breiner found in Mexico were among 31 subsequently unearthed at three archaeological sites called San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán that were cultural centers for the Olmec civilization dating to 1,200 to 900 years before Christ. Driskill-Smith said her father discovered that these sites, constructed primarily out of volcanic basalt, were aligned toward magnetic north — long before the compass was invented.
He told researchers that his magnetic surveys identified as many as 100 large monuments, but most remain buried. Driskill-Smith said Breiner stopped digging up the artifacts after a helicopter arrived in the middle of the night and stole one of the heads.
Breiner often returned to the archaeological sites in Veracruz, where his 13-ton head is now displayed in the Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa. [end excerpt]

The last important structure, called “Structure IV”, is, in fact, an immense rock-cut chamber cut directly out of the cliff face. The chamber is rectangular, measuring nearly 20 meters (65 feet) on its longer side by 10 meters (33 feet) on the shorter side. It is open to the east and has a rock-cut bench running along the perimeter of the walls. A number of pillar bases and a rectangular basin, probably serving as an altar, are also similarly cut from the living rock. The depth of the cut reaches at least five meters (16 feet) on the northern side. In addition, the upper portion of the cliff face appears to have been artificially leveled, perhaps in an even earlier epoch. It is possible that from this chamber alone at least 1,000 cubic meters or 3,000 tons of rock were removed in ancient times! The astonishing precision of the cut, which left a very smooth and remarkably planar rock face, with no visible chisel or other tool marks, suggests the use of tools that would have hardly been available to the Aztecs or any of the other known Mesoamerican civilizations of antiquity. In all of Mesoamerica, a similar style of monolithic architecture is only found among the ruins of Texcoco, which bear a distinct similarity with the rock-cut temples of Malinalco, although on a much smaller scale. As in the case of Malinalco, the perfectly cut and polished stone basins, stairways, and rock-cut chambers of Texcoco exhibit a level of workmanship far in advance of what could have been achieved with simple stone tools. In addition, the significant erosion to which the rock surface has been subjected in both cases is indicative of an antiquity far more remote than the supposed 15th or early 16th century assumed date of the carvings.
Another point of similarity with the ruins of Texcoco is offered by the presence of rock-cut aqueducts. A number of water channels can be found at Malinalco, particularly on the upper terraces. Their great antiquity is testified by the fact that they appear in some cases to have been cut by later structures and rock-cut trenches.

Songkran (Thai: เทศกาลสงกรานต์, pronounced [tʰêːt.sā.kāːn sǒŋ.krāːn]) is the Thai New Year's national holiday. Songkran is on the 13 April every year, but the holiday period extends from 14 to 15 April. In 2018 the Thai cabinet extended the festival nationwide to five days, 12–16 April, to enable citizens to travel home for the holiday. In 2019, the holiday will be observed 12–16 April as 13 April falls on a Saturday. The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti,literally "astrological passage", meaning transformation or change. The term was borrowed from Makar Sankranti, the name of a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart and with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia, in keeping with the Buddhist calendar. The New Year takes place at virtually the same time as the new year celebrations of many countries in South Asia like China (Dai People of Yunnan Province), Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka.
In Thailand, New Year is now officially celebrated on 1 January. Songkran was the official New Year until 1888, when it was switched to a fixed date of 1 April. Then in 1940, this date was shifted to 1 January. The traditional Thai New Year Songkran was transformed into a national holiday.
Songkran derives from Sanskrit meaning 'to move' or 'movement'. It derives from the movement of the sun from one position to another in the zodiac. According to its literal meaning in Sanskrit, a songkran occurs every month. However, the period that Thai people refer to as songkran happens when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries in the zodiac. The correct name for this period should actually be Maha Songkran ('great songkran') because it coincides with the arrival of a New Year. The songkran festival is, therefore, a celebration of the New Year in accordance with the solar calendar. The celebration covers a period of three days: 13 April is regarded as Maha Songkran, the day that the sun moves into Aries on the zodiac or the last day of the old year. The next day, 14 April is called Wan Nao, the transitional day between the old and the new years, and 15 April is called Wan Thaloeng Sok (Thai: วันเถลิงศก 'to begin a new era or year'), New Year's day itself. Nowadays the royal palace ceased to issue Songkran notification; they replaced it with a small calendar booklet given to the public on New Year's Day. Government Savings Bank still prints a one-page lunisolar calendar, which is different from multiple-page solar calendar commonly seen. The calendar features the image of Songkran goddess with her vehicle and subordinates, led by Chinese zodiac animal holding a flag with Thai script for that zodiac. It also contains a comprehensive information on the correct Songkran day and religious days. Some astrologers, especially in northern Thailand, still issue their own Songkran notif ication containing predictions and other information.
