During a drought in 1848 in the village of Liczkowce— at the time under Polish rule (now Lychkivtsi, Ukraine)—the river dried up and the pillar became visible. It was rescued from its muddy grave, and given to a local Count Mieczysław Potocki, who shared it with the Kraków Scientific Society in 1850.
Based on the carved images, Potocki believed the ancient monolith was connected to the deity Svetovid, who was usually depicted with a sword or bow and a drinking horn. The deity was also symbolized by the white horse, one of the images found on the Zbruch idol. [end excerpt]

A team of Kuwaiti divers have salvaged a sunken wooden ship, which was reportedly built centuries ago, from the Kuwait Bay and is now patching it up, local media reported.
Waleed Al-Fadhel, the chief of the diving team attached to the country's environmental protection organization, told the Kuwait News Agency that with the help of the coast guards and the maritime rescue center, the divers used air bags and water pumps to float the ship to the water surface.
It is reported that the 25-meter-long ship, which took 30 months and eight to ten hours each day to build with old tools during the period from the 18th Century to the early 19th Century, sunk amid strong winds and huge waves.
The ship needs to be removed as its dispersed parts at high tides may pose a threat to maritime traffic and the fuel and oil it contained could contaminate the aquatic environment, said Al-Fadhel.
This ship was a traditional Kuwaiti sailing vessel traveling from Kuwait to India and East Africa as well as Aden and Basra, he said. And it was extremely rare as only three vessels of this type had ever been manufactured in the Gulf, he added.
