Revealing the Lost Secrets of Doggerland

Approximately 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, rising sea levels fed by melting glaciers submerged the land bridge that once connected the British Isles with mainland Europe, which scientists have named Doggerland. Little did anyone realize that archaeological treasures were lying buried on the bottom of the North Sea as a result of this deluge, in the form of artifacts left behind by hunter-gatherers who roamed the area during the last Ice Age.

These treasures remained hidden and inaccessible for thousands of years, until human ingenuity intervened. The 20th century invention of deep sea mechanical dredgers allowed engineers to scoop out tons of material from the bottom of the North Sea, which was then used to rebuild and refortify the eroding shoreline of the Netherlands.

Mixed in with the muck were an impressive collection of fossils and human-crafted artifacts, fascinating remnants that could potentially reveal new details about the lost nomadic lifestyle of the hunter-gatherers who populated Stone Age (Mesolithic Era) Doggerland. These artifacts were found scattered across Dutch beaches, where they were eagerly harvested by archaeologists, anthropologists, fossil hunters, and other interested parties. Among these artifacts were some small, sharp, pointed weapons that had been crafted from bone, presumably for placement on hunting tools like arrows, spears, and harpoons.

The bone points in themselves weren’t an eye-opening discovery, since similar pointed weapons had been found at other sites in Europe and Asia. The difference was that instead of being excavated during scientific explorations, they’d simply appeared almost as a form of refuse, casually and haphazardly strewn across the North Sea beach sand by dredging operations. Perhaps because of the way they’d been discovered, over the years little serious research had been performed to investigate their properties.

That is, until the Leiden University research team of decided to apply sophisticated molecular measuring techniques to determine the animal sources of the recovered arrowheads. These techniques can identify specific protein markers or signatures that are unique to each animal species, including human beings.

The scientists weren’t sure if proteins would remain intact and un-degraded in bones that had been sunken in undersea mud for thousands of years. As it turns out, proteins can stay intact inside bones that have been preserved in this unique way, and when the Leiden researchers analyzed the bone points closely they discovered something unexpected. While most of the points were made from the bones of ancient red deer , a species common to the Doggerland region during the Mesolithic Era, two of the pointed weapons tested were found to have been carved from human bone fragments. Carbon-14 (C-14) dating of multiple samples of bone from 8 dinosaurs found in Texas, Alaska, Colorado, and Montana revealed that they are only 22,000 to 39,000 years old.

Members of the Paleochronology group presented their findings at the 2012 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting in Singapore, August 13-17, a conference of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS). [...]

Dr. Thomas Seiler, a physicist from Germany, gave the presentation in Singapore. He said that his team and the laboratories they employed took special care to avoid contamination. That included protecting the samples, avoiding cracked areas in the bones, and meticulous pre-cleaning of the samples with chemicals to remove possible contaminants. Knowing that small concentrations of collagen can attract contamination, they compared precision Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) tests of collagen and bioapatite (hard carbonate bone mineral) with conventional counting methods of large bone fragments from the same dinosaurs. "Comparing such different molecules as minerals and organics from the same bone region, we obtained concordant C-14 results which were well below the upper limits of C-14 dating. These, together with many other remarkable concordances between samples from different fossils, geographic regions and stratigraphic positions make random contamination as origin of the C-14 unlikely".

The theoretical limit for C-14 dating is 100,000 years using AMS, but for practical purposes it is 45,000 to 55,000 years, depending on the type of equipment. The half-life of C-14 is 5730 years. If dinosaur bones are 65 million years old, there should not be one atom of C-14 left in them.

Clearly something is wrong with the conventional wisdom about dinosaur bones, but it has been hard to reach the public with the information. Despite being simple test results without any interpretation, they were not allowed to be presented in conference proceedings by the 2009 North American Paleontological Convention, the American Geophysical Union in 2011 and 2012, the Geological Society of America in 2011 and 2012, and by the editors of various scientific journals. Many dinosaur bones are not petrified. Dr. Mary Schweitzer, paleobiology researcher and professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University, surprised scientists in 2005 when she reported finding soft tissue in dinosaur bones. She started a firestorm of controversy in 2007 and 2008 when she reported that she had sequenced proteins in dinosaur bone.

Critics charged that the findings were mistaken or that what she called soft tissue was really biofilm produced by bacteria that had entered from outside the bone. Schweitzer answered the challenge by testing with antibodies. Her report in 2009 confirmed the presence of collagen and other proteins that bacteria do not make. [...]

Schweitzer wondered why such materials are preserved when all the models say they should be degraded. She coauthored a paper published in 2014 proposing that there is a role for iron in preserving proteins in fossil tissues (royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rspb.2013.2741) [archive.is/p4uk6]. However, iron is not always present in dinosaur soft tissue. Jasmina Wiemann coauthored a paper published in 2018 proposing a different solution to the problem: polymerization of proteins in oxidative settings (nature.com/articles/s41467-018-07013-3) [archive.is/JtB9o]. However it is preserved, if the original organic material in dinosaur bones is less than 55,000 years old it could reasonably be expected to contain measurable Carbon-14, and so it does. For years, until their access was blocked, the Paleochronology group had AMS laboratories conduct Carbon-14 tests on dinosaur bones. The tests yielded dates in the range of 22,000 to 39,000 years before present. [end excerpt]

Seeds produced by the regenerated plants germinated at a 100% success rate, compared with 90% for modern plants. Scientists are unsure why the observed variations occur.

According to Robin Probert of the Millennium Seed Bank, the demonstration is “by far the most extraordinary example of extreme longevity for material from higher plants” to date. It is not surprising to find living material this old, but is surprising that viable material could be recovered,” she added.

The reasons for the success of the experiment can be manyfold. The Russian scientists involved speculated that the tissue cells were rich in sucrose which acted as a preservative. They also noted that DNA damage caused by gamma radiation from natural ground radioactivity at the site was unusually low for the plant material’s age and is comparable to levels observed in 1300-year-old lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) seeds proven to germinate. This dramatic climate shift is linked to drought and famine around the world, which may have made humanity more susceptible to "Justinian's plague" in A.D. 541-542 — the first recorded emergence of the Black Death in Europe.

The new results come from an analysis of Greenland ice that was laid down between A.D. 533 and 540. The ice cores record large amounts of atmospheric dust during this seven-year period, not all of it originating on Earth. [‪Photos of Halley's Comet Through History]

"I have all this extraterrestrial stuff in my ice core," study leader Dallas Abbott, of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, told LiveScience here last week at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Certain characteristics, such as high levels of tin, identify a comet as the origin of the alien dust, Abbott said. And the stuff was deposited during the Northern Hemisphere spring, suggesting that it came from the Eta Aquarid meteor shower — material shed by Halley's comet that Earth plows through every April-May.

The Eta Aquarid dust may be responsible for a period of mild cooling in 533, Abbott said, but it alone cannot explain the global dimming event of 536-537, during which the planet may have cooled by as much as 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius). For that, something more dramatic is required.

Ice core data record evidence of a volcanic eruption in 536, but it almost certainly wasn't big enough to change the climate so dramatically, Abbott said.

"There was, I think, a small volcanic effect," she said. "But I think the major thing is that something hit the ocean."

She and her colleagues have found circumstantial evidence of such an impact. The Greenland ice cores contain fossils of tiny tropical marine organisms — specifically, certain species of diatoms and silicoflagellates.

An extraterrestrial impact in the tropical ocean likely blasted these little low-latitude organisms all the way to chilly Greenland, researchers said. And Abbott believes the object responsible was once a piece of Halley's comet. [end excerpt]

A smaller piece destroyed Britain, Ireland was also affected. The main impacts were actually in Brazil and another hit Bolivia and Mexico was also affected.

Rome heavily and actively edited out this history from written record. Justinian declared it heresy to suggest that heavenly bodies fell from the sky and refused to send aid, which in turn caused mass starvation and a mad max type dystonia in the British Islands. The Dark Ages followed.

Nevertheless some written accounts did survive, French and Norwegian in particular...The Norwegian accounts being beyond papal reach. It is estimated that over 2 million died in the British isles alone, and countless millions died indirectly across the globe. The accounts say that it was like daylight in the dead of night as Britain burned, and that was from accounts across the channel and Norway. A true apocalypse.

- [comment]: A comet was said to have virtually wiped out the thriving society in post Roman Britain. That was in 562 AD and taking into account the timescale it’s plausible that further debris was still hitting earth. Now dismissed as just legendary, the comet/asteroid passed over the British isles and most likely made landfall in Bolivia. It left the “badlands “ which were uninhabitable for over a decade and is clearly referred to in contemporary writings in France.

If so the Saxons merely walked into land in recovery and uninhabited. Any survivors would have been in no position to repeal such an influx of Saxon settlers.

More importantly it rewrites “dark age” history of Britain and should be investigated properly, not merely dismissed by archaeologists who seem to just want to ignore it.

Some DNA analysis showed that the elongation present in Paracas skull was not the result of artificial skull deformation, but genetics. Some of Paracas skulls have a cranial volume that is up to 25 % larger and 60 % heavier than conventional human skulls. While artificial head deformation can change the shape of the skull, it cannot change its volume. But there's not all left, studies conducted on enigmatic elongated skulls have revealed that they were not native to the region possibly migrated from Eurasia more than 2500 years ago.

Studies on exact dating and decoding the inscription are underway at the Museum of Writing, part of the North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU).

Pavel’s village is some 100 kilometres north of Yakutsk, the regional capital, and the world’s coldest city.

Another example of Turkic runes in Yaktutia is the so-called Petrov inscription.

It is a writing made using ocher some 200 km from Yakutsk.

It is known as the most northerly rune inscription in the world.

Researchers in the middle of the last century believed that the inscription indicated the location of medieval treasure.

A literal translation is said to read: 'Pearls of the tribe Az.’

The Old Turkic script - also known as variously Göktürk script, Orkhon script, Orkhon-Yenisei script - is the alphabet used by the Göktürks and other early Turkic khanates during the 8th to 10th centuries.

The script is named after the Orkhon Valley in Mongolia where early 8th century inscriptions were discovered in an 1889 expedition by Nikolai Yadrintsev.

These Orkhon inscriptions were published by Vasily Radlov and deciphered by the Danish philologist Vilhelm Thomsen in 1893.

This writing system was later used within the Uyghur Khaganate.

Additionally, a Siberian variant is known from 9th century Yenisei Kirghiz inscriptions, and it has likely cousins in the Talas Valley of Turkestan and the Old Hungarian alphabet of the 10th century. Words were usually written from right to left.

Yakut runic letters are the least studied in Siberia.

They provoke heated discussions among the linguists and Turkologists.

But most new finds of inscriptions are made in Yakutia.

Now the total number all Yakutian finds is close to 90.

Most runic inscriptions of Yakutia have not yet been deciphered.

'We have collected Baikal's endemic crayfish, caddis, and did a microbiological analysis. Two weeks afterwards, it wasn't yet clear whether there were bacteria. However, later we obtained 30 great strains, about 90% of which were active.' [...]

'We obtained moonmilk substance and found 10 new strains of actinobacterias, producers of several antibiotics, from it,' he said. 'According to the study, they produce previously unknown biologically active compounds including antibiotics which inhibit growth of bacteria and fungi.
